Default I'ma newb and my bike died, what happened?

OK I was a little over an hour into my trip and I came to a stop light and had to sit a while. My bike starts chugging at a lower and lower rpm until it died. I had to do the push of shame out of the way. My temp gauge was good and my bike was running fine up until then. I got it started and thought it might be low on gas and I switch it to reserve. I decided to get gas at the next station and put 2.9 gallons in it. I had put on 96 miles since the last time I filled up. I thought I could get better gas mileage than that and my tank had more room than that.

1. Was I out of gas?
2. How far should I be able to go on a full tank?
3. Doesn't that gas mileage seem a bit low for driving it very easy?

Sorry if this has been discussed, I didn't know what to look for.

Thanks in advance for the help.

quite possibly out of gas, i usually fill up around 110-120 miles and put in about 2.7 gal
if it started on reserve but not on "on" it might have been out of gas. i think tank is 3.5 total, 2.9 in on position and .6 reserve

Based on what you said then I guess I was out of gas.

I really thought it had 4.5ish gallons in the tank and got way better gas mileage. Oh well, I'll know for next time. Thanks for the help.

you just gotta get used to stopping and putting in 8 bucks more often, you will get it figured out after a few times running out, haha thats how you learn how many miles you can go

lol def out of gas... i have ran out of gas twice and i have been riding about a month... and usually only on the weekends. i also turn my fuel valve off everytime i get off the bike so i have a tendancy to forget to put it back on and my bike will chug chug and come close to dieng then i filp the valve to on and im good to go. this is a great way to get familiar with when to turn ur fuel valve to reserve, and immediately get to a gas station
