High Voltage when Revving
I wired up my radar detector earlier this week. I went to put it on my bike and when the bike isn't running the detector works fine. When the bike is idling the detector works fine. But at 3 or 4 grand the detector has this "high voltage" warning that comes on. I got out my multimeter to read the voltage when I was revving and it's anywhere between 15.5 and 16.5. Is this a problem with the stator? I know on a car the voltage is regulated between 13.7 and 14.4 when the car is running. Is there a way to regulate this voltage on the bike or at least step it down?
Thanks in advance,
Joe

I ran the power off the ignition I'm pretty sure. I just spliced into a hot and ground source near where I was going to mount it. If it was a problem with the RR wouldn't the bike not hold a charge? I will head out there tonight and try to troubleshoot it. Best case scenario would be that it is the R/R I'm assuming. Cheaper than any other part to replace?
R/R has two jobs. One is to regulate the voltage from the stator.
So far you've listed one symptom of the R/R being bad: High voltage at the battery when revving. Give this a read: http://www.electrosport.com/technica...ng-diagram.pdf
Or use the manual's diag for the r/r. If you don't have the manual, you can download it here: http://www.stephygee.com/F3manual.zip

something like this thats sensitive you want to wire off the battery. the battery will act as a "cushion" for the voltage. however, 16.5 is too high i recent literally melted a battery at 17 volts so be careful. it was the RR. its under the rear tail fairing.. I ordered one on Ebay and it cooked. dont buy a cheap one. and dont put it off. cheap = more problems, not fixing it = possibly cooking the stator and battery as well as getting stuck somewhere. these RR's are known to go. wire in one from a different year bike. I used an F4i RR and it barely even gets hot now and its consistent voltage.
My understanding is Honda revised the r/r and improved it. If your order a new OEM one from the dealer or a website that carries new OEM parts, you'll get the revision.
People have had pretty good success with using one from Electrosport. They also have replacement r/r connectors, which you may need if yours is burnt (usually another sign of a bad r/r)

I need to grab my multimeter from work and test my R/R, but I've noticed at night, the lights are a bit dimmer at idle, brighten up from 1000-2000 RPM, and dim back off a bit above that. Sound like a bad R/R? No other problems to this point.
As I said, I'll take a multimeter out later or this weekend to test.
