fuse keeps blowing and engine sputters
Ok,
So here's what happened the other day. Rode it about 8 miles to work in the afternoon, and it was working fine. Got done with work around midnight, it was a little damp outside (seat was damp too), and it was misting on the bike. It started up fine with a little choke, but about halfway home the running lights/guages started to flicker intermittedently and the engine started to sputter/lunge. then after about a minute of this everything except the headlight went out and the engine continued to sputter. I got it home and found the fuse blown, but I replaced it and it blew right away again. I rode it around without the lights and it seems like it runs fine in 1st gear, okay in 2nd, but at 3rd and above it really starts to struggle. Also, I did jump my bike with a car the day prior to this all happening, but if that had screwed something up, wy would it take so long? any advice would help. thanks guys

RE: fuse keeps blowing and engine sputters
Shouldn't matter how you got it started. 12v battery is a 12v battery.
Seems like you got some water in the control module or some other area and the wires started grounding. Also, depending on miles, the wires. if wet could be arcing and causing the engine to run poorly. I'd let it dry for a while or offer it help and see how it runs.

I've had a problem exactly like this... my problem was a shorted turn signalwire kept blowing fuses, my gauges didn't work and it ran like crap.... I fixed the short and everything ran great again... you might want to check for a short or an electrical component may be bad.

I'd be checking the charging system - specificall your regulator/ rectifier. Got a multimeter? There's a how to floating around somewhere that will help you diagnose charging / electrical problems. The flickering headlight is a common sympton as is the spluttering and hard running.

12volts is always 12 volts. but 2 amps produced by a bike could be 20 amps produced by a car. I believe car alternators produce more amperage than motorcycle stators. Still...it isnt enough to hurt anything in your bike, i jump my bike with a car whenever i need to. It does sound like there is a short in the wiring somewhere, arcing to ground from the water. That would explain your fuse blowing. Just let it dry out and see how it runs. Hopefully it didnt get into your control module and arc in there.

thanx everyone for your advice. So yeah after I posted that thread Iwent and replaced the fuse again and everything worked fine. well except one of the speedo lights is burnt out i think, its all dark on the left middle part of it. but now I noticed at night when I ride the first time I really gas it and wind it out in whatever gear (usually passing someone) the lights dim, almost like the R/R cant keep up with the engine and supply enough voltage to the lights and whatnot. But I plan to replace it tomorrow along with a new battery so I'll let you know how that turns out.
