Flooded 96 SJR. Strong fuel smell in oil.
Hey Folks,
Took my bike for a quick ride last evening, and right away I could tell it wasn't running quit right. Drove it around the block and back in the drive way where it died. Parked it, and found a puddle of fuel under it. Frisbee size. Took the fairings off too look for the leak. Didn't see anything under the carbs. When I checked the oil level, I could really smell fuel in the dipstick hole. Couldn't tell if the viscosity was effected.
After checking all the obvious stuff, I tried to start it and it wouldn't even turn over. New battery, fully charged. So, I pulled all the plugs (new also). 2 & 4 were slightly black, others ok. Cranked it without the plugs and it sprayed fuel all over the place. But it did turn over. Replaced the plugs and it started up and idled ok.
So, I'm thinking #2 & #4 carb floats may be sticking allowing too much fuel in the engine. Or could it be the head gasket?
I'm out of town till Friday. Is there a carb re-build kit, or do I have to order each bit separate?
Thanks for the help.

Hey man, sounds like you hydro-locked the motor with fuel. Removing the plugs and turning it over was a good plan. I would definetly look into the float levels of the carbs. Worked on a old VFR750 and the carbs were in bad shape, and the cylinders would just fill up with fuel and the whole motor would stick. I doubt your head gasket was affected. good luck and let us know how it goes!
edit: BTW, you should probably change your oil as well. fuel leaking past the rings and getting into the crankcase isnt good. Fuel destroys the oil.

Thanks for the reply.
It was definitely a hydraulic lock on one of the pistons that cleared when I pulled the plugs and cranked the motor.
I'm going to pull and clean the carbs. But, is there a "carb re-build kit" for these carbs offered by any of the online parts sellers?? I can buy a carb "re-build kit" for my MGB that has every replaceable seal and gasket included. I thought there might be something available for this... I'd rather have all the things I need to finish the job before I start it. I don't have a Honda stealership close, I'll have to order everything. And while I've got them disassembled, I might as well replace what I can.
Thanks for any suggestions!

edit: I'll change the oil first thing when I get home!
