The engine sputters like it is out of gas one day, so I pull into the gas station to fill er up and there is still like a third of a tank in there. On the ride home, it is fine and close to my house, it starts sputtering, like it is running out of gas. You know when you try to give it gass and it just takes off slow and sounds like a tractor. I replaced the fuel filter because the old one was crap and dirty, but I still have the same problem. I am going to remove my tank tomorrow to further investigate. Is there some kind of screen right above the pet-**** that might be clogged or something. I will also look at the air filter when the tank is off, but it was so sudden that the engine started sputtering. If it was the air filter, wouldnt it gradually get worse. It just seems to me that it is something in the fuel lines. Help please!!!

You might want to check the operation of the fuel pump as well. I find it hard to believe that the screen on the petcock assembly would cause that unless it was really clogged. I've had the petcock assembly out of a tank and it doesn't pick up fuel from the very bottom of the tank. That's where you think that it might pick up some contamination.

No problems with the fuel pump. works great. fuel filter was dirty, but replaced. same problem.. K&n was dirty as sh#t. Cleaned it thoroughly. put everything back together. Still same problem. I checked all of the hoses and they are all good. I am trying the spark plugs tomorrow cause it is too dark and late. Any other suggestions??? also advance doesnt have the ngk plugs in stock here, and Im not paying dealer price, would the autolite plugs (which are the ngk's replacement at the store) as good as the nkgs??

i'm having the same problem with my 98 f3.. i bypassed the fuel pump and just ran a line from the petcock to the fuel filter to the carbs. also changed the spark plugs, fuel filter, and even got the coils checked out. everything is up to par and it still have a hard time going when you pull the throttle for more speed.
any clues?

advanced auto..... a clear plastic inline filter....if you drain your tank, then drop the petcock out of the bottom, you will see a filter the size of a cigarrette lighter(cheap clearplastic kind)with screen...what happens is the lower part becomes clogged---i eliminate that and splice in a clear bulb filter(capacity to handle 350 smallblock) runn ing between the petcock and carbs ...

It sounds like a venting problem - air is not getting into the gas tank as you use the fuel. It'll run ok at first but after a point the fuel will not flow as it should. Try this: open the gas cap, then closeit. Go for a ride and if it acts up again pull over and open the gas cap, then shut it. Start riding again. If it runs ok then that's your proble. Clear the vent holes in the gas cap/fuel tank and you should be good.
