Default Charging issue....any tips?

So I JUST bought a 1997 F3 and I absolutely LOVE the bike. BUT. It is not charging correctly it seems....the previous owner put a new battery on the night I got it.

I have ridden a few hundred miles then blah, batt dead. I rolled it off to get home from work today and headlight stays bright for the whole 35 mile ride.

Get home and try and restart it and nothing. I am in the proccess of charging the battery now and will check voltage coming in tomm.

Is there anything I am unaware of I should check in the proccess?

Thanks in advance for any tips/help

R/R could be out.
might wanna invest in a voltmeter (15.00) at walmart
and a motorcycle batt charger (20.00) at walmart.

The R/R is a known weak spot on Honda's. I suggest upgrading to a GSX/R regulator rectifier. They're easy to install, plenty of instructions on this forum, and they have much bigger heat sinks to dissipate all the heat.

Totally agree with IdoDirt. When I first got my F3 I was having issues with the R/R and battery too. I must have switched out R/R's and batteries like 3 times before I finally said to hell with this and bought a gsxr one. All I had to do was drill one hole and a little bit of basic soldering, and presto, charging problems solved. Been going for like 15k miles no with no issues.

Could possibly be initial charge on a new battery. Bought a bike brand new from dealership and after 60 mi. or so the bike would run great but the battery didn't seem to get a charge. Problem: weak initial charge along with several short trips never allowed the battery to get fully charged. Threw it on a trickle charge for a day and haven't had a problem since!

just make sure you get a harness too if your wires are out..

like 20 bucks tops on ebay (when mine went out, the wires melted)
it's good if you aren't a wire junkie like me
