Default Chain Adjustment

I'm going crazy with my chain, Can someone clarify for me how I measure chain slack.

I'll tell you how I did it:

1. Raised the rear tire on my stands

2. I never found a tight spot which isn't a problem since sometimes there isn't one I'm told.

3. In the middle of bottom chain I put a tape mesure on one of the links and then push up and measured the slack.

4. Adjust chain and tighten axle and locknuts.

5. Check chain again.

6. Test drive and check again.

Ok here's my problemI tend to overthink things, Currently I'm down a tooth in the front and my measurement of slack is 3/4-1" (depending how hardI push up on it) on my test ride everything seems good except I thinkI hear a "whirring" noise from the chain area whichI have no idea if it was there before.

Have I done something incorrect? If I push up on the chain hard it does hit the plastic chain guide on the swing arm. my wife thinks I'm crazy cuse i always second guess myself.

Any input would be helpful

Don't know if this will help because your procedure is fine:

The whirring noise is normal.

Believe me I think I've seen every DIY for chain adjustment, the thing that throws me off is this picture:

Most of my slack is when I push up on the chain, when I push down it already pretty tight maybe 1/8th"I know i'm just putting to much thinking into this but I just want to be sure. Also how do you guys measure each side of the swing arm that each side is correct? I've been using calibers and measuring the window and and the first mark which is 4 mm's on each side.
