Mattson, I owe you big time. Will try this tomorrow. I am waiting for the spare starter relay that I am sure is the reason that the bike won't start. As soon as I get that (tomorrow I hope) I'll do this too. Again, thanks mate!

Oh! Just remembered you have the manual APE, just for clearness sake you naturally have to do the tension adjusting part too described on the other thread, I changed an automatic OEM hydraulic one to another of the same sort...

No, actually I hadn't so thanks for being thorough. Haven't received my spare part from the glorious nation across the water yet so I haven't really checked it, but I am now fully prepared thanks to you!

Update:

I made some progress today but not as much as I was expecting. A couple of days ago I replaced the old regulator/rectifier and the burnt plug. Today I replaced the starter relay and charged the battery. However, I wasn't met with the roaring I was hoping for but neither the dead silence that was before. The lights in the instrument cluster come on but faintly and there is like s wailing sound from the panel. It is as if there is not enough current flowing through the system. Of course the engine doesn't start at all. But at least the new relay is working because I can hear it click and at least I have some lights.

Any ideas what to check before I start the excruciating process of tearing everything apart again?

Dumb question but did you check all your fuses? Make sure your battery leads are tight. Also, check the connector at the starter relay. Mine was corroded and such when I replaced mine.

Not a dumb question! Checked all fuses and made sure that the battery was tight. Could be a bad connection in any of the wires in the plug that goes into the R/R but should that really have an impact on the light before the engine starts? Will check all connectors for corrosion again. Thanks, gtcole.

That would depend I guess on if its pulling juice from your battery before hand. I guess the only way to tell that would be a battery drain test. First though, if you haven't already, check all your grounds that you can. Sometimes you'll get correct voltage but not a solid enough ground.
