Are rims from different bikes insanely different from each other?

IE unusable?

Just wondering if a wheel is a wheel is a wheel if it's the same size?

Or does the cush drive / sprockets etc mount differently on certain bikes?

 

I have an interesting story on parts interchangability. Back in 1985 I needed a new chain and sprockets on my 750 Nighthawk. The shop that Ibought my parts atback then (Orange Co CA) sold me the parts and I merrily went home to perform the work. Wouldn't fit. My sprocket was a four bolt and the one he sold me was a five. I took it back and he said that the part was the right one and asked me to limp my bike in so he could see it. The chain and rear sprocket were so bad that I balked at riding it. The parts guy bet me the cost of the parts that he was right. I trailered my scoot in and sure enough the stuff would not fit. He did some cross referencing and found out that I had a rear rim from a VFR 750 intercepter. Now the strange thing about this is that I had purchased the bike new from a place called South Coast Honda. I checked with the tech who had uncrated my scoot and he said no substitutions had been made. The front rim and the VFR rim were so similar you couldn't tell they were not a match. I was stoked because not only did I get my parts for free, but the VFR sprockets came in more size combinations than the Nighthawk sprockets. I don't know what Honda was doing back then but I guess it was working for them.

 

Well, the reason I ask is that there are some Brembo wheels from a Ducati 748 being sold for dirt cheap, and of course I'll need to get a single sided swingarm.

I just wonder if I got a VFR or Hawk swingarm, how much machining is going to need to be done to get the axles and bushings to fit?
