Default Overheating?

Hi all. I just got my first bike yesterday, a '93 CBR 600 F2 (red, balck and silver color scheme). I don't have my license yet, and I don't take the BRC for 2 more weeks so I haven't really ridden the bike on a public road yet. I have ridden it 5.1 miles around my neighborhood, and I am already addicted. Now to my question: Is this bike air cooled or liquid cooled? Since I have only ridden in my neighborhood at a max speed of 20 MPH I can't tell if my bike is overheating or not. The temp gauge gets to just below the red zone, but it hasn't crossed into it yet. My street is very short, so it's a lot of turning around and slow riding. Is there anything for me to worry about, or have I just not been able to go fast enough to air-cool the engine? If I am overheating it what things should I look for to fix it? Thanks in advance for all the replies... oh, one more q: my idle is set to 2k RPM. Is this too fast? Should I back it down a bit? Thanks again!

check coolant level. Thhe bike is liquid cooled. Lower ur idle to about 1400rpm.

Well, my bike from a cold start in the morning takes me about 4-5 miles to warm right up riding easy to about 1/4 way up the temp gauge. It won't go over half unless I let it sit idling for a few minutes.

Hello. Another thing is to make sure the cooling fan works when it gets hot. Good luck with the bike.

Sorry for such newb q's, but my local Honda dealership is closed on Sunday and Monday so I can't go buy a shop manual 'til Tuesday. Where is the radiator cap on this bike, and what plastic do I have to remove to check my coolant level? Also, how do I check to see if my fan is running? My carbs have been jetted, but everything else is stock. Would this have anything to do with running hot? Thanks again for all replies... Oh, one more thing... are aftermarket brake and clutch levers as good as Honda levers? How much could I expect to pay for Honda levers at the dealership? Thanks again!!

WELCOME TO THE ADDICTION SYNDROME OF RIDING A MOTORCYCLE AND IT IS GREAT THAT YOU WANT TO LEARN ABOUT YOUR BIKE AND WORK ON IT FOR YOURSELF. YOUR PROBLEM AS SAID ABOVE ARE WHERE YOU CAN START THE PROCESS OF ELIMINATION.

CHECK YOUR THERMOSTAT IT MAYBE STICKING OR PROBABLY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED, LIKE ABOVE CHECK YOUR COOLANT LEVEL IF IT IS LOW IT WILL OVERHEAT OTHER THAN THAT YOU SHOULD TAKE IT IN AND HAVE IT CHECKED.

When I got my f2 the first thing I wanted to know was if the fan works.

I got it running good then pulled over and let it idle...then looked behind the radiator to see if the fan was running.

It was!

Aftermarket levers are usually ok.... OEM ones tend to survive a fall better though.
