My 93 F2 project begins!
 

so I bought a 93 F2 for £500, (800 dollars). overall, im happy with the bike, it was cheap, and bought with one intention. to learn exactly how these things work. Ive been riding and racing for 5 years, but mechanically, im a complete novice. So she was bought as a project, and now, after ones days ownership, its already a bigger one than i thought.
broke down after one decent ride, after advice of this forum, im thinking carbs so will invest that shortly.

Ok, so my plans!

• i have already purchased decent panels which are all being professionally sprayed in gloss black, along with the wheels which need blasting and power coating.
• down pipes are being replaced
• clutch and brake levels are being replaced
• center stand, rear foot-pegs are being removed.
• swing arm is being replaced
• replacing standard brake lines with braided ones
• exhaust needs reriviting
• forks need respraying at the minimum

and anything else i find whilst going over!

Quick story
20,000 on the clock, 3 owners, last guy resprayed it himself with a can and ruined it and didnt maintain it - lack of knowledge.
To be fair, overall i think this will end up being a brilliant bike. lets jsut see what happens! :)

Man - In the states bikes don't typically come with center stands, but damn I want one for my bike.

You can easily get help with problems you find on the way here on the board. I am sure alot will help with quick answers to get you fixed and back on the road.

Stripped the bike down to get to the carbs to try and locate the cause of my running issues. pretty confident that they are fine so back to the drawing board.

Found alot more rust than i expect and some seriously dodgy wiring, seems someone in the past has been having a mess.

Tomorrow, rebuild the bike and see if my tinkering has magically solved my problem, i guess we can all live in hope eh

Relevantly clean id say, but, i did take all the jets out and soaked them overnight before blowing them next day, and id just like to say, having never really worked on a bike before like this, i was super proud of myself being able to do all that alone, and i wouldnt of been able to do it without the help of this forum! the carb cleaning tutorial was so precise and helpful, top marks to whoever created that!

anyway, built the bike back together, same issue, DAMN!

after ealise the exhaust is blowing badly and taping it up, ive realised what the probably is, the FUEL SWITCH!!!!

The bike runs, when pointing down, she gets half a mile and dies, and when pointing across the bike or parell with the ground its off, i know its off cause when i took the tank of to do the carbs, it didnt leak. so what do i do now??
is it ok to leave it pointing up all the time??

and also, ive seen alot of talk of SEA FOAM.

what are the general rules regarding this product, after just doing a carb clean, is it worth using this, are there any disadvantages???

I posted in your other thread, but I'll put it here too. Fuel valve pointing up like that is on reserve. pointing forward is off, and pointing down is on.

reserve makes the fuel pickup from a lower level than the regular pickup - is it possible you only have less than a gallon of fuel in the tank at the moment? You may not have fuel up to the upper pickup level.

It sounds like when you point the arrow down (on) that there's no fuel flowing, and your carbs are running dry.

If you have plenty of fuel in the tank, then I'd suggest that your regular pickup might be clogged or blocked. Our bikes don't have fuel filters, other than the screen around the pickups inside the tank.

Since you're having trouble now, I'd drain the tank, pull the petcock assembly out and inspect/clean.

Also - like the Bimmer - they won't sell us a 1series 3 or 5 door in the states.

Ahh - also forgot to answer you about Seafoam - typically it is well regarded. Much better additive/cleaner than some of the cheaper brands out there. I try to run a bottle through my bike 1-2 times a year. I also use it in my atv, and cars/truck as well.

I consider it more of a preventative than a solution - but you've already done the heavy lifting with soaking your carbs and jets.

gonna drain the tank, the switch is obviously at the end of its life so i might just replace it.
