My 93 F2 project begins!

so I bought a 93 F2 for £500, (800 dollars). overall, im happy with the bike, it was cheap, and bought with one intention. to learn exactly how these things work. Ive been riding and racing for 5 years, but mechanically, im a complete novice. So she was bought as a project, and now, after ones days ownership, its already a bigger one than i thought.
broke down after one decent ride, after advice of this forum, im thinking carbs so will invest that shortly.

Good points
cheap
brand new tyres
long mot and tax
and thats about it :/

bad points
Brakes arent great
currently not running (afore mentioned issue)
plastics are heavily damaged
extensive rust.

http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/v...y/IMG_4746.jpg

Ok, so my plans!
 • i have already purchased decent panels which are all being professionally sprayed in gloss black, along with the wheels which need blasting and power coating.
 • down pipes are being replaced
 • clutch and brake levels are being replaced
 • center stand, rear foot-pegs are being removed.
 • swing arm is being replaced
 • replacing standard brake lines with braided ones
 • exhaust needs reriviting
 • forks need respraying at the minimum

and anything else i find whilst going over!

Quick story
20,000 on the clock, 3 owners, last guy resprayed it himself with a can and ruined it and didnt maintain it - lack of knowledge.
To be fair, overall i think this will end up being a brilliant bike. lets jsut see what happens! :)

adrenalnjunky 12-04-2012 10:20 AM

Man - In the states bikes don't typically come with center stands, but damn I want one for my bike.

underground-mpyre 12-04-2012 10:37 AM

You can easily get help with problems you find on the way here on the board. I am sure alot will help with quick answers to get you fixed and back on the road.

richbransby 12-04-2012 03:12 PM

todays developments!

Stripped the bike down to get to the carbs to try and locate the cause of my running issues. pretty confident that they are fine so back to the drawing board.

Found alot more rust than i expect and some seriously dodgy wiring, seems someone in the past has been having a mess.

on a different note, finally found a use for my spare room! although im not convinced the mrs's can see my point.

Tomorrow, rebuild the bike and see if my tinkering has magically solved my problem, i guess we can all live in hope eh

+1. I have wished I had one so many times...

richbransby 12-07-2012 05:03 AM

ok! so, carbs, took them out and they looked like this...

Relevantly clean id say, but, i did take all the jets out and soaked them overnight before blowing them next day, and id just like to say, having never really worked on a bike before like this, i was super proud of myself being able to do all that alone, and i wouldnt of been able to do it without the help of this forum! the carb cleaning tutorial was so precise and helpful, top marks to whoever created that!

anyway, built the bike back together, same issue, DAMN!

after ealise the exhaust is blowing badly and taping it up, ive realised what the probably is, the FUEL SWITCH!!!!

When in this position,
The bike runs, when pointing down, she gets half a mile and dies, and when pointing across the bike or parell with the ground its off, i know its off cause when i took the tank of to do the carbs, it didnt leak. so what do i do now??
is it ok to leave it pointing up all the time??

and also, ive seen alot of talk of SEA FOAM.

what are the general rules regarding this product, after just doing a carb clean, is it worth using this, are there any disadvantages???

oh, and just a vanity picture with my car, cant wait to get the bits shipped off to the paint shop after christmas :)

adrenalnjunky 12-07-2012 09:40 AM

I posted in your other thread, but I'll put it here too. Fuel valve pointing up like that is on reserve. pointing forward is off, and pointing down is on.

reserve makes the fuel pickup from a lower level than the regular pickup - is it possible you only have less than a gallon of fuel in the tank at the moment? You may not have fuel up to the upper pickup level.

It sounds like when you point the arrow down (on) that there's no fuel flowing, and your carbs are running dry.

If you have plenty of fuel in the tank, then I'd suggest that your regular pickup might be clogged or blocked. Our bikes don't have fuel filters, other than the screen around the pickups inside the tank.

Since you're having trouble now, I'd drain the tank, pull the petcock assembly out and inspect/clean.

adrenalnjunky 12-07-2012 09:57 AM

Also - like the Bimmer - they won't sell us a 1series 3 or 5 door in the states.

adrenalnjunky 12-07-2012 10:02 AM

Ahh - also forgot to answer you about Seafoam - typically it is well regarded. Much better additive/cleaner than some of the cheaper brands out there. I try to run a bottle through my bike 1-2 times a year. I also use it in my atv, and cars/truck as well.

I consider it more of a preventative than a solution - but you've already done the heavy lifting with soaking your carbs and jets.

richbransby 12-07-2012 10:21 AM

gonna drain the tank, the switch is obviously at the end of its life so i might just replace it.

also, as requested, here is a picture of the carbon fiber Ducati I used to race.
was pretty trick !

i got one for my 92 on ebay...i think theres another one on there

richbransby 12-20-2012 07:53 AM

ok so just a small update at the moment.

Ordered and received this the other day.

New CCT, hasnt been fitted yet, as i rode the bike 2 & a half hours away from home to the paint garage.
Is currently under going prep on all the body work to be made beautiful so when i get up there again i fill fit whilst paneling is off, You might also be pleased to here that after the initial problems, the bike ran like a dream all the way, was very impressed.

Also, i have an 8 second video id like to post on here that a friend took of the bike as I passed him in the street.

ADVANCED WARNING
If this video is a breech of user terms or rights please tell me immediatly and i will take down, last thing i want to do is cause any issues.
THERE IS one swear word at the end of the video said by the recorder, the word is used twice and was said, i guess, in awe of the bike as i went passed, the only reason i want to show you is so you guys can hear the beautiful noise my exhaust makes that i get hear all the time, for a bike thats nearly 20 years old, i personally feel its brilliant.

Again, apologies if it offends or is not allowed, please inform me immediately.

adrenalnjunky 12-20-2012 12:56 PM

The video isn'thosted on this site, and you warned any potential viewer of the language. I don't see the harm.

The footage is of you riding your bike at what I'm sure is a responsible speed for the conditions given. Sounded like the speed limit to me - who am I to say you were exceeding, rite? Bike sounds good, glad to hear it is running well.

hi guys, sorry for the delay in progress. long story short, i changed my job, moved 300 miles away and had nearl all of my stuff in storage for the last couple of months, including the bike!
but, starting to get my feet back on the ground now and getting back round to sorting out the CBR.

So its undercover in a garage now and ive got most evenings to work on her, moneys abit tight so that is hindering progress but im making up for it with hard work and elbow grease.

The tail end of the bike has been a major bug bear of mine since i bought the bike, the plastic is all broken, sprayed with a rattle can in black and generally, just crap. so I started stripping it down.
http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/v...pse389eeaa.jpg

When i took teh seat and the plastics off, this is what i found! :/
http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/v...ps7afc614d.jpg
Some serious issues with rust. and the wiring to the rear lights, lets just say that it is Not satisfactory, ill let you judge for your self just how bad it is but i was quite shocked.
Attachment 34765
Attachment 34766
Attachment 34767

So, now i need so advice please.
This is how the bike is currently sitting.
http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/v...ps836b2f21.jpg

Ive got my self a load of sandpaper and some wire brushes. ( if i had the money id strip the whole thing down and have the frame sand blasted)
Im going to do my best to remove the rust and paint it myself.
I want to know, what kind of paint should i use??? should i treat the metal after its been sanded down?? Is there any kind of sealer i can put on it before i paint it to stop the rust from returning??

oh, bit of good news, i got a delivery of a 03 CBR RR tail end im going to fit to the bike to give it a slightly more sporty stance :D so im excited about that!
Cheers in advance.

CorruptFile 01-27-2013 09:12 AM

As for the wiring - nothing I haven't seen before. It seems nobody knows how to solder anymore. Good thing is if you are putting in a new tail, you will need to wire that - so start fresh from there.

As for the rust, a good brass brush for the 18V drill should take care of that. I'd spray it with rustoleum after that. BUT, if you are fitting an RR tail you will probably have to cut/bend the frame at the back. I'd deal with the rust, modify the frame, then spray it. It will help you seal the welds.

That most certainly is a bargain, indeed!! Nice find! :icon_toast:

adrenalnjunky 01-31-2013 09:56 AM

Man - wirewheel that rusty frame and get some primer/paint on it. With a rear wheel hugger on the bike - I'm kinda curious what conditions would cause that? Lots of wet/salty roads, or an exploded or leaking battery getting all over everything.

The shock reservoir def looks like it has a lot of built up roag corrosion/grime.

I worked as a car audio installer for years - that wiring looks pretty good, even if completely inadequate compared to some of the stuff that rolled into my install bay.

CorruptFile - soldering is def a lost art, but what amazes me is people that won't use a butt-splice, twist on wire nut, or even electrical tape over bare connections.

salt deffo causes this kind of crap build up, i had this problem.... its deffo worth getting it sandblasted and painted, i not looked back on how much it cost i m just happy to of had it done. worth every penny!

richbransby 01-31-2013 01:06 PM

Do you mind me asking how much it cost you to get it done????

I need to really. I'd rather get it done properly

A company in crediton, devon, called CS engineering. it cost me £85 for my frame. all done within 5 days. they have just taken on my wheels now to blast and spray! (recomended)

richbransby 01-31-2013 04:08 PM

So they blasted and powder coated for £85. That's cheap!

richbransby 02-10-2013 08:57 AM

Thinking of buying this.... Thoughts ????

Are you looking at swapping it in as a replacement frame? Don't know the rules on registering a frame with no paperwork, but Sounds like this frame can't be registered easily at best.

Ok guys, small update.
Things are moving alot slower than i thought they would which is annoying, Im currently moving house again, which becoming hellishly expensive but its all due to the bike.
Ive specifically got a new place with a double garage. After the 11th of march I will have room for this project bike to properly work on her, and on a race bike im going to bike, more info to follow.

For now though, ive taken delivery of these.
1995 front forks
Attachment 34377
Attachment 34378
http://i683.photobucket.com/albums/v...psdbd8dd4f.jpg

As you can see. Dust seals are shot to bits, and there is light misting on one of them from the oil. So i want to change the seals, and get them in stalled.
Here in lie's the problem.

1st being, these are obviously 1995 so F3 forks, Will these fit directly on to my bike?? as in, take mine off, put these on, and its done, or as i THINK you will say, ( from reading another posts) that I will have to use the lower parts of my F2 forks, and install the tops off these F3's????? or fit an F3 wheel also???

2nd being, I do not want to pay the garage £148 + Vat to change my seals as they have quoted, thats more than 200 bucks!!

I have searched and searched for a detaiuled thread on replacing the seals, but i cant seem to find one, i have a Haynes manual, will that be enough to walk me through it, or is there a thread already showing me what i need to know???

Ive done my home work, and I will be ordering OEM Seals so's as no to have to do it again.

Any help you can provide will be MUCHLY appreciated.

Optimus_Prime 02-24-2013 11:54 PM

If you haven't already read it, this thread is a sticky in the F2 tech section and should be a lot of help with what you can do with those F3 forks...

https://cbrforum.com/forum/f2-tech-9...-answer-83285/

richbransby 02-27-2013 04:28 PM

Thanks. Ordered two sets of seals, will replacing both in both sets of forks and keeping the others as spare.

Took the bike out for a ride tonight... All sorts going on I don't like.
Getting tremendous vibrations through the rear brake pedal when using it.
The clutch lever is getting so heavy I'm physically getting wrist and arm ache.

And the engine it's self! Jeeez! It's like it's made of old bolts and nails rolling around in a bucket!!! Terrible throttle bogging in every gear, in various stages of the rev range. And the whole engine seems to be vibrating and crunching in lower revs.
I'm no mechanic. And I don't fully understand how it works but its gone so sluggish, I dunno, it literally feels like the engine is falling apart and bouncing around in the casing /:

Eurgh!

richbransby 02-27-2013 04:30 PM

Also, I can not for the life of me get it over 115.

I've raced bikes. I know how to handle a bike yknow, it just won't do it!

richbransby 03-24-2013 03:55 PM

Ok so, been a while and had lots going on so heres a nice quick rundown with pictures to go with.

1. Moved house and found the garage FULL of crap, so that needed cleaning out, I painted it, wired it up so it had lights and power, and thought sod it, I love my bike so its getting carpeted as well!

2. had alot going on with the house so after that the bike sat there till today.

3. Got alot of the bike striped down, all the plastics have been removed, as has the tank, the gauges and the rear light cluster.

Problems -
1, whilst riding the bike to the new house, the exhaust EXPLODED, and I mean, exploded aha, you'll understand when you see the photos.
2, the down pipes are split I think, Ill upload a few photos of the area I mean and theres movement between the welds... can I get them re-welded or do I need new downpipes?
3, the rust is catastrophic all over the bike.
4, the brakes are binding, front and back.
5, the wiring harness needs to be replaced, its been cut and messed with so much im sure its unsafe.

What I want to do now, is carry on taking it apart, I want to strip it right down and get the frame powder coated, but im unsure of what to do next?? should i do the forks? in which case how/where/ what do I do to keep it from falling over??? bricks under the block? tie it to the roof??
Also, anything you guys notice in the photo's that needs attention or replacing, please, point out for me!

Oh, Also, i ordered some new fork seals, please notice the sticker on the back... telling me that i cant use them?! aha any ideas?

I was actually thinking that as well. Here I am, complaining about the state of my bike, and then I see this... But you're probably much more competent in these matters than I am so I'll gladly follow this thread and see if I could learn anything. Good luck, mate!

Yeah, dont be to confident, im a sales man, not an engineer unfortunately aha
Still, I enjoy this kind of thing and i'm willing to learn, so with abit of help im sure ill get her back to factory condition soon, Just want to get moving with it NOW as the riding season will be on us before i know it, and here in the UK, it only lasts about half an hour lol.

Migge 03-27-2013 02:57 PM

I am in Sweden so I do know what you're talking about. According to the weather prognosis, we're gonna be stuck in winter all April. It sucks when you need to take your hundred horses for a run...

campos_motorsports 03-27-2013 05:57 PM

Well I must say you have some work in front of you but nothing impossible. The room looks good man, reminds me of one of those 007 movies for some reason, lol. Well and the corrosion is obvious that it needs a little love. Do you plan on swapping out everything from the rear?

gtcole 03-27-2013 06:33 PM

At least you have a comfortable work area..... nothing is impossible with a little help along the way..... good luck and keep the pics coming

Tbh, I wasnt planning on replacing everything, the spring yeah, thats shot I think so that'll need replacing, but the rear swing arm, I was going to get it sand blasted, sealed and then powder coated along with the main frame in gloss black?? providing i can actually get it apart of course, I'm dreading trying to undo some of these nuts and bolts ://

So where do I go from here, I need to get it down to the frame, so do I start with the wiring, the forks? whats the next step, I've never gone this far before.
Do i suspend the frame from the roof with rope, or do i take the downpipes off and put some bricks under the engine to hold it up???

Seriously need some advice cause I havent done anything else yet.
Thanks in advance.
