Default fan not turning on

My 91 F2 gets preety close to overheating sometimes because the fan doen't turn on when its supposed to. anyone had this issues? can anyone guide on what my next step is. The previous owner says it a wiring thing, but could that mean the relay or the wiring?

how close is close? it gets pretty far up before the fan kicks on, plus its not really noticable over the engine.. when it is that hot, hit the kill switch and then you can hear if it is on or not. I think there is a sensor on the radiator itself... i am not 100% on that, but is is possible that could be bad as well.

Just checked, it is called the FAN MOTOR SWITCH. Not sure how you would test it though.

If you're facing the bike looking into the headlight the switch will be on the lower right side of the radiator.

I had the same problem. Overheating and the fan would not turn on. A simple spin of the fan by hand revealed a rock that was stuck in it which prevented it from spinning. It worked perfectly from there on. I guess I am lucky the motor didn't burn out...

If you ever touch that fan by hand make sure your battery is disconnected

It was the fan motor switch that gave me the problem. Where do I find one to replace it? I am tempted to install a manual on/off switch(bypass the fan motor switch) since I can turn the fan on if I gound it. I think a simple push button switch (about $1.00) should do the trick. I would just mount it on the tree or the handlebars somewhere. If the replacement switch is expensive I might just do that.

I would just buy it new from a dealer..

From bikebandit.com the switch is part number 152061-001 and is $55.85

good thing it's not the fan, it would of cost ya around $300

for that price, I'd rather get the cheap manual switch. I'll post after I install it to tell ya how it worked.

I know this is an old post, but I had the same exact problem and thought it was my switch also. It actually was a bad ground to the radiator. Just take a jumper wire and go from the frame to the radiator or the base of the switch to see if the fan will come on. Hope this helps. Peace!
