Default The 900 swap

Ok, so it's been a while since I posted, but it's been a while since I fooled with the bike too. The rectifier died AGAIN at the end of this past year and I moved so I've had a lot of other projects to deal with. I recently replaced the rectifier with a unit off of a 2008 Yamaha R1. The voltage is now at 14.4 and more stable than it's ever been. One the swap: From my research, the 600 carbs are a no-go. 900 carbs can be had for about $175 plus a jet kit to get them tuned. Not sure yet about the exhaust. I'm thinking I could use the pipes that are on the 600, but a set for the 900 are pretty cheap used. The radiator: must be upgraded or there WILL be cooling issues. Airbox: after altering the frame to fit the engine, I plan to buy a stock airbox from a 900RR, trim it to fit inside the frame, and close it back up with aluminum flashing or something similar. Not sure yet if this will still allow an air filter to fit but I hope so, as I've read that individual cone filters lead to jetting nightmares. Fairings: I figured I would tape a piece of 1/4" foam rubber to the points of the engine that stick out the farthest on each side, black the foam with shoe polish, and test fit the fairing sides. This should give me a good black mark on the inside of the fairing wherever it might need to be cut to clear. So, that's it for now. Going out to dinner and the girlfriend is rushing me! Ride fast, ride safe!

The POD filters are a headache to tune, but your situation is different.

The reason they are a pain and carborated bikes have airboxes is for the sake of keeping air pressure consistent. The pressure in the airbox and the float bowls largely remain equal, but with pods all kinds of variables enter the equation.

If you put pod filters on inside of an airbox, even a modified one, you should get much more predictable results.

I thought I read somewhere the lid to the 900 air box wont fit with f2 frame. You have to leave it off and glue the filter in the bottom half of the air box.

Default Air filter tom-foolery..

That sounds like a good option. The mounting of the air filter without the lid. maybe use studs through the bottom and a couple of holes in the filter with nuts and washers to hold it down. Question is: is the air metered more by the filter or by the intake air holes in the top of the box? ie: the intake tubes in the front of the box on the F2?

Default Update!

Ok, I decided to buy another F2 frame to perform the swap on. I thought it would make more sense to do the fitting work on a spare frame and then pull everything off of the one I'm riding and swap it to the new one. If I'm going to be pulling the fairings, wiring, engine, and whatever else to clear my path for the fitting, cutting, welding, etc., then it would be the same amount of work to put it back together on the new frame. This saves tearing down the bike I'm riding until after the engine is mounted and ready to go. A question though: what's up with the various 900rr carbs? Some have a throttle position sensor wire, some don't. Can I use any of them or only the non electronic ones? I'm asking because I just want to get the best price, because I'll rebuild and jet whatever I buy anyway. Also, is there any specific year 900rr carb that performed better compared to other models?

Yep. This one is currently stalled, but work will commence shortly. I had a break in and was robbed of $300 cash and about $2,500 in firearms. If I don't end up in prison for sorting this out my way (the local police have little to go on) I'll get this thread breathing again when my finances finish soaking up the loss. Sorry guys, this is going to be a good write up and I apologize for leaving everyone hanging.

That totally sucks....the world would be a very different place if burglars and theives were dealt with the way I would like them to be, that's for damn sure!
The last burglar that hit my house (after stealing a GPS and digital cameras from cars up the block), I caught, while he was trying to steal more items from my neighbor's garage - I held him at gunpoint until the police arrived - he's gone away now for four years.

One thing's for sure though, while you possibly "sort this out your own way"....you don't have to wonder whether or not they are armed!! Be careful!!

I just bought a CBR600F2 (FM1991) with an 893cc Fireblade squeezed in. Can post some pics when I get the fairings and tank off. I need to as it runs like a pig - its really tricky to get it settled in the corner coming on and off the power. On the power its great, in fact is reminds me of an old slabside GSXR750 I had that ran on pod filters without the airbox. Something is well amiss with the fuelling.

As for fitting everything in, mine has standard fairings and nothing cut out of the frame. It is however still running the standard rad.

So, HandFull, it's been roughly 2 1/2 months since we've heard anything from you on this...is your project now permanently derailed, or still just postponed?

I hope you're not sittin' in the can, after huntin' down one of your burglars, and servin' up some "come and get it" style justice!!
