The cam chain will eventually break or skip a tooth, catastrophic engine failure could ensue, generally bad things will happen.

the rattle could actually be your gas tank. and the rumble could be a bad ignition coil, thus resulting in only 2 cylinders firing, making it sound like a cruiser. that's what happened to me anyway.
