CBR F2 Build thread. Also need opinions
Hey guys whats up. Im new to the site and Honda bikes. My first bike was a 94 ninja zx6r, then i bought a 2004 gsxr 600, and then sold that to buy this f2. I bought the f2 because i wanted to build a stunt bike that i didnt have to worry about dropping or messing up. I know the honda have great balance point, and are damn near bullet proof. So i got the bike home, and stripped it down to bare frame and was going to build a stunter from the ground up, painting and cleaning evereything and replacing anything that was work along the way. Well my plans changed. Im no longer building a stunter, Im building a raw, fast, loud bike that does nothing but go in a straight line really fast. Ill mainly be using it at the drag strip and on the highway, or just cruising around town on the weekends. So anyways, heres a couple pics of the bike when I picked it up.
I payed $400 for the bike exactly as you see it. It had a bad motor (spun a bearing), needs fork seals, tires, brake lever, gas capand a motor obviously. Other than that it just needed cleaned up. Its a very solid bike and a great base for a project. So i completely disassembled the bike down to every last nut and bolt. I stripped the frame and swing arm with aircraft stripper, wheels are next. Everything else is just going to get cleaned really really good and painted if needed. I am on a budget of $2500 and I have no deadline, I want it to be done right and I want to shop around for the right deals. As much as I want to get a few good months of riding in this season, Id be perfectly fine with taking my time and finishing it late fall and letting her sit through the winter. So now for the plans. Please please please tell me what Im doing right and what needs to be reconsidered or changed. Thats the whole reason for this post. This is also my first time putting the plans on paper so bare with me.
Motor $550 shipped
CBR F3 Motor, built by FTZ. Came out of a dirt track quarter midget car, has 2 races on it, still very fresh. Dynoed at 137hp as is. Still a lot more potential.Motor is complete with 33mm flatside carbs and is ALCHOHOL POWERED! I got a hell of a deal, it has $1200 in headwork alone. The guy was selling all his F3 motors to switch to R6's because aparently they are better on the short tracks he runs on. Also comes with MSD ignition. This setup is fully tunedand ready to run, the only problem is this. For the class of race car it came out of, they only use gears 1, 2, 3. The teeth have been cut off of gears 4, 5, 6. Im going to take 4,5,6 out of the spare motor I have (as long as they are in good shape) and put them in the new motor. No big deal right? The spare motor is an f2, the new motor is an f3. Is the gearing the same?
Frame/suspension
Frame and swingarm stripped and powdercoated baby blue
swingarm extended anywhere from 4" to 8" (need opinions on this)
swingarm widened to fit bigger tire (see below, also need opinions on this.)
lowered 2 inches
new fork seals
stock shocks and springs, they are in good shape (I will eventually work the suspension, but for now im just wanting to get it streetable and reliable)
Wheels/Tires
Stock wheels powder coated baby blue
Tires will probably be Michelin Pilot Powers. I can get race takeoffs that look brand new for FREE any time day or night.
120 front tire, widest rear tire I can fit on stock rim (170 maybe, someone tell me for sure)
*OR*
Stock front wheel, Wider rear wheel
120 front tire, maybe 200 or 210 rear tire. (This is one of my biggest dillemas. Going to a big rear tire will eat up a big portion of my budget). The tire itself, having the rim widened or buying a new

should have gone with a 900RR engine..pretty much a direct bolt in.
also as for the swingarm- i would go 4" i have 10 and theres not enough wieght on the tire for traction when the track isnt perfecthttp://www.candscustom.com/
sprockets start with -1/+2
also for drag racing dont use race takeoffs, i tried them and they dont hook on the strip!
as for lowering it only go 1.5", i went 2 and 3 and it will bottom on the undertail and blow the fork seals within 2 weeks.

hey thanks man, that was all very helpful information. exactly the type of thing im looking for.the pic in your avatar, is that dropped 1.5 inches? im sending you a pm right now about the 900rr motor
also, why dont race takeoffs work on the strip? usually they are brand new in the middle with just a little scrubbing on the sides. I usually air them down to about 18-22 psi as well but that was on a (relatively) stock bike. any idea why they dont work or thats just the experience youve had?

a F3 rim will bolt on directly to a stock F2 swingarm, 180 is max and that still puts it really close to the chain but there is clearance..
heres some reading on the 900 in a f3(same as a F2)http://home.insightbb.com/~cbr600f3/
