Aa man so sorry to see that, was just about to write how well preserved that thing was. But as always the main thing is you're here to tell us and not rotting in some canyon under the wreckage. It stings but material is always replaceable.

Dude, sorry to hear about the accident but I'm glad you're alive to tell us about it. It's scary to think about how fast the best thing in the world can turn into a life threatening situation. I'm sure you'll be up and riding in no time though. Stay strong, mate!

That totally sucks. Hope you heal fast so you can get back to riding and wrenching.

I've only done a bit of wrenching. Did some repairs to the yamaha and finally mounted the front wheel to the cbr.
Everything requires two hands though, even just using a screwdriver or socket wrench. I end up regretting using the left, so I had to stop tinkering. Even tried helping my mom work on her clocks and hurt my hand worse than working on the wheel.

In other news, I got a new set of gloves.
Knox Biomech Red

I got a barely used set from ebay for $100 shipped. Almost like new.
They feature a patented scaphoid protection system, which is what fractured on my hand, and happens to be an extremely common issue for riders.
It's these plastic sliders in the lower palm, one right on the scaphoid, the large ball area under your thumb.
What normally happens, and happened to me, is when you fall your reaction is to put your hand down. Two things happen to riders then. One, you get the initial impact. Two, the leather palm grips the road surface and twists the scaphoid and thumb, instead of sliding.

This is exactly what happened to mine.
The newer version of the biomech is called the "handroid". It's pretty wicked, but too expensive for me right now.
KNOX Hand Armour Handroid V14 White

I also picked up a barely used two piece leather/kevlar suit from AGV sport on ebay for $108 shipped. Just needs knee pucks.
Can't say I'm a fan of the design, but who cares, it was cheap and in great shape!

I just needed leather pants, which even used go for $100-150.

So anyways, I'm just keeping busy getting gear and waiting.
Once my hand is better I plan to take an intermediate and advanced rider course, one of them on a track.
I got lucky for such a stupid minor mistake.
Some of the curves on the mountain road I was riding had major drop offs with no rails.

I'll have something CBR related soon, once I get the rear wheel mounted I can finally roll the bike out and spray down the engine and frame, then soda blast and touch up some rust spots.

Looks like pretty sweet deals. Cool gloves, wouldn't mind a pair of those myself. And a riding course on a track is never a bad idea, in fact have two tickets to one myself in august, can't wait.

Existenz_is, that scrap hold thing seems incredible. That's the exact area where I hurt myself the worst when I fell a few days ago. I need to get me a pair of these myself! Thanks for the pro tip!

I found out about the knox sps sliders by shear luck from another forum.
Knox patented the system, but a few other glove makers use their system, like scorpion for instance. And this one Racer R-Safe Gloves Review - webBikeWorld
When I looked up the info it made perfect sense. The plastic pads help with the initial impact, then keep the glove from grabbing and twisting the scaphoid.
It turns out this is a very common injury among riders, especially racers.

I just found out today that I will need surgery on my thumb, requiring two pins to hold it in place temporarily.

What happened with you?

Sorry to hear that you need surgery, but I guess it's better to do it now and heal faster than walking around with no measures being taken at all.

I think I'm going to look at these ones, they seem to have the SPS sliders:

These ones too but they seem like overkill for my riding .

What happened was that I went down in a turn on some loose gravel on top of a stone paved road. Slippery as h**l apparently. My wrists still hurt as does my knee but I'm thankful anyways, it could have been much worse. And the bike (the KTM) took it like it was almost nothing. But I was only going 60 km/h so it wasn't superfast. Odd thing is that there was no sliding involved but rather straight down into the ground.

Your bike didn't slide after laying over?
Or you didn't?

I still don't remember where my hand was when it hit. I remember the feeling of something snapping in it though.
The glove would indicate it sliding and grabbing on the ground, but I'm not sure.
I didn't slide but maybe a couple of feet, since I was going fairly slow and slid into a dirt embankment.
I was paying too much attention to what was about to happen to my head to worry about my hand.

I did some research on those handroid gloves as I currently am in the market of getting a new pair and came accross a few interesting cases where a crash with those gloves had resulted in the carbon fiber palm protector detaching from the glove severing the rider's fingers to a point that on one case the pinky had to be amputated. Now these are isolated cases, no one ever comes to the internet to write how a product did what it was supposed to do, and we cannot know were the crashes so bad that their hands would have been toast anyway but surely gave me a scare. Deffy gonna have to go try some different models out to see if they even fit but I'd prefer some kind of protection to my palms as well as wrist bracing as those two are problem spots for me and I fear that a spill which I try to catch with my hand could quite possibly render my hand(s) in an unrideable condition.
