Transmission question.
Is your clutch cable adjusted too loose ? ... I've heard of bikes being difficult to shift into neutral if the clutch is dragging and has tension on it from a loose clutch cable ... care to check that ??? ...
This is no doubt a clutch problem, most times this problem occurs is due to the clutch freeplay and the clutch not fully disengaging the engine from the transmission. When you adjusted it, did you adjust it at the lever end or the clutch side cover, from the side cover there should be slight tension on the cable, your freeplay is adjusted at the handle. When was the last time your clutch was done? What type of oil are you using?
Try this, when you have it in gear and bike running, pull the clutch in all the way then release it to the point that you can feel the bike start to drag a bit, then pull it back in ever so slightly and try to put it in neutral. If it goes into neutral, you need to readjust your clutch.

guess I just got lucky the first time I tried your method, seems like I have to try real hard and be careful with the clutch to get the bike into neutral while running.
