Default intermitent problems

I just finished putting my bike back together after swapping the motor changing the suspension and painting.

The problem i am having is that it runs fine for a while then all of a sudden the spark goes. when i changes the motor to an 88 i later learned i had to change the harness and the cdi. So i did that and now it runs sometimes then just as i described the spark cuts out.

any ideas? I will post up some pictures after i get it together again

Why did you have to change the wiring harness and CDI ? I know the difference as I have an '88 bike with a '89 CDI. Only had to make one small mod for it to work.

I have a '88 bike with an '88 harness and an '89 CDI. I had to connect a wire from the CDI plug to ground to make the CDI think that the sidestand was up since '88 does not have that switch. You said you have an '89 bike with an '88 motor and harness. Is that correct? Should be the same as mine then. It's been a long time since I did that mod. I can take a pic if you like and send it/ post it/ whatever to you, if you think it would help.

My only real problem is that the two boxes have a different plugs. The one newer one has just a strip of plugs on the end of the box and the older one has two littlier plugs i know which wire needs grounded out but just want to make sure that i need to splice the harness to the newer style plug

thanks again for the help

Does it look like this? The red wire is the one I added and connected to ground. ( Bonehead me used red and not green ). They just plugged right in. No other splicing/maiming of the wiring harness was necessary. Again, '88 bike and wiring harness and '89 CDI.
