IMPORTANT - Please read! (pics of crack in frame)

I shoul've adopted the same attitude...
Damnit! Why did I read this thread? [:@]
I got 'ze crack', and it looks identical to that in the posted image.
It got me thinking and I'm wondering, this is a 20yr old bike, at what age or after how many miles would this crack typically start appearing? If left untouched, does it expand and eventually grow long/large enough to split the frame? Did anyone hear about it breaking off completely? If not, assuming the crack has been there for the past 10 or 15 years, it tells me that this is about as bad as it will ever get and people been riding the bike as is without any other consequence(s). If a repair is absolutely necessary, can it be done with the engine still in the frame?
I'm just throwing out my thoughts on this. I'm pi**ed off that I didn't notice it when the engine was out and don't feel like doing it all over again, especially since it just started being nice enough outside to ride...

I have yet to check mine. Its been on my list of things to do, but its also on the list of things I just might not want to know.

most of the old hurricane/f1's that i've seen were in pretty decent condition or at least taken care of.
mine is an 89. i also have a 88 frame, also no cracks. has anyone noticed if it is happening on a certain year or years?
Re: why only the left side, I would say that's structurally the weakest point (you're only as strong as the weakest link theory, water always finds it's level... you know what I'm getting at).
In the case of my bike, I believe the bike has been ridden hard in the past (seen the track) as there's some bolts on it that have been drilled so they can be wired to the frame and a few in the headlight bucket that still are. I also agree with an earlier post that wheelie's are also likely culpritas well.

Welded (MIG) up the crack just now.I believe I got good penetration and it flowed well (I'm not a professional welder) -we'll see how the weld holds upover time.
Got a slightbit offline following thecrack up asit was hard to follow due to prepping the area (crack got lost in the grind) - so I had to widen theweld. All-in-all, it doesn't look to bad (IMHO). A little bit of dressing up tomorrow and I'll beready to touch it up withpaint.

I just checked and mine has it too. It's probably only on the left side because it's a kick stand issue. This is good news I guess because it means the stresses of riding aren't causing the damage which means regular riding is less likely to make the problem worse.
I need to find someone with an angle grinder and a MIG welder now.
