take out the key, get on the phone, call your local dmv with motorcycle classes. Take the MSF course.
, if you don't know how to start a bike, you should probably, high suggested, taking the class.

Well I thought you were clueless too. Your original post sort of gave the impression that youdidn't havea clue and as strange as it may seem that there are people that clueless riding motorcycles, one trip to a MSF class will bring it home for you.
Now, on to the "what to look for". Give us something to work with. What was wrong with it? How long has it set? Was the bike complete when you bought it or in pieces? How does the oil look? What about the coolant level? Air cleaner? Tires, chain and sprockets, fork seals, battery? We certainly can't give you pointers if we don't know what we are working with.

i would suggest cleaning the crap out of the carbs. then buying new plugs. how long has the bike been sitting? you may need to drain the fuel from the tank and get fresh. i might change the oil depending on how it looks i would but just one extra plug and take the wires off the plugs one at a time to see if all cylinders are sparking. that is just a general list off stuff you may need check alot of things let us know what the bike does when you try to crank it so we got an idea on what a problem might be.
I would recommend a manual they help alot. For your more hands on things, these bikes being old, they tend to have little problems here and there, and the book helps alot i got my today and it help me with cleaning my carbs. Got it off ebay for $5.50 with shipping. But if your into walking to the computer and back to the bike all day you can check out cbrextreme.com they have a downloadable manual.
alright everyone . i noticed alot of play in my rear shock. is there a aftermarket replacement. or do i go to the dealer. or just buy a used one. my fork seals are busted. would i be better off updating my forks wit a new bikes forks. or fixing the old ones. if so which ones are interchange able. let me know.
how much do you have to spend?
a used rear shock will be much cheaper than any new aftermarket shock. but maybe Hagon will be cheapest of the bunch. others are nitron, hyperpro, and ohlins to name a few.
fork seals are econonical but you should also change the fork bushings while you are at it. and maybe the springs if out of spec or if you feel the need buying stiffer springs to firm up the forks and emulators for better fork action. any honda fork setupwill pretty much bolt on as far as the steering tube goes but you will need a complete front end (rim, clamps, rotors, calipers, fender) and some bit of modding as none of the f1 stuff is interchangeable with later model years fork setups.
