Default Fork Rebuild

The forks on my 1990 600 Hurricane need to be rebuilt. I have a shop picked out to do it, but my question is what is all involved in the rebuild? I know of the fork seals being replaced because mine leak. But is there anything else internally that may need to be replaced or repaired?

only the seals. unless your springs are out of service limits then i would get those replaced. i had stiffer springs put in and emulators.

Dont' forget to check for nicks in the tubes. Do this especially if you do have blown seals.

There are bushings inside that may be out of service limits too.

The sig pic is a link to our parts finder. You may find glancing at the forks for your year helpful.

My bile only has 17000 miles on it, it was an storage a lot. I'm not sure about what abuse it may have suffured since all the plastic was missing, although there a scrapes on on side of the engine. What do I look for so that I know I'm not geeting screwed if a mechanic it needs some part? This is my first motorcycle ever and I know next to nothing about them.

The first thing I consider a suspension upgrade is tossing away any "progressive" springs you find on a used bike.

The second is to install a proper rate straightwound spring for yourweight. You cannot set a bikes sag with progressive springs. Improper sag = crappy suspension.

If your bike has obvious crash damage, you need to dissasemble the forks completely. Order every replaceable wear part from the fiche (parts diagram) and replace them.

As soon as the forks are apart on your 90 model, put the upper tubes in V blocks and check them for straightness. On these traditional forks, if there is no kink, you can straighten them in the V blocks with a hydraulic press.

If they have nicks that you can feel with your fingernail, those can be addressed with a fineabrassive. The coating is "hard chrome". Not doing this will cause the new seal to tear and leak again PDQ.

Since the forks are off, check the steering bearings and the triple trees for straightness as well.

Hope this helps and good luck with the project.
