Definitely the side stand switch as a possibility. If the switch is not making contact then the bike will not start.
I used an '89 CDI box on my "88 Hurricane which has no side stand switch. I had to install a wire from the CDI box to ground so the bike would start. When the side stand is up, the switch shorts something in the CDI box to ground. Check the wiring diagram and you will see.

yes, since you actually have an '89, then try this. Locate the 3 pin connector that the side stand switch connects into the main wiring harness. Disconnect it and put a jumper wire on the harness side of the connector between the green and green\white terminals. This will be as if the side stand is up and your bike should start ( assuming that's the only problem ). PM me if you have further questions. Good luck. Hate to be obvious, but I assume that all fuses are good ,ignition is on and engine stop switch on throttle side is engaged.
