dead cylinders
ok quick question I wanted to ask before I started ripping my bike apart. I just bought a 1988 600FJ according to the frame. The guy I bought it off of dumped the bike (on the right side sitting on the bike) and now the 2 cylinders on the right side are dead. I have checked fuel, spark and compression with my hand over the plug holes on the valve cover and it blows my hand off. The question I have it where to look at now. I was thinking valves but wanted to ask if any one had this problem before. Thank you in advance.
Yep already did that...I am a mechanic on cars but bikes are just a little different. i checked spark and fuel first. so im thinking since he dumped it he may have knocked a lifter loose or something. i rode it and it wont go over 50 and real doggy. I can put my hand and hold it on the 2 pipes on the right and there cold. Thank you for helping im just looking for anything else that maybe easier to fix before i go throwing money at it.
i dont think a lifter came loose, if the motor isn't cracked up, i doubt anything is wrong with it. i think its something with the carbs. maybe the float is stuck or jet clogged. i would pull the carbs and clean them first.
well i got the carbs apart today. there was oil in the carbs that where on the dead cylinders. i will clean them tomorrow and put back on. then it should fire right up on all four cylinders i would expect. thanks for the help will keep updated.
well i cleaned the carbs and replaced the plugs...the 2 dead cylinders seem to be running...but the pipes are not getting at hot as the other side. i noticed that the guy before me cut one plug wire boot short and one has a crack in the plastic covering ( on the wire itself ). so im gonna replace those any other ideas would help. thanks alot.
