Default Compatability.

Hello,

I'm curriently semi-restoring an '87 Hurricane 600, and was just curious about compatability with other years of hondas, to maybe upgrade a few things throughout the winter and my restoration:

Gas tank: do any other years/sizes have gastanks with similar measurements? If they were pretty close I could fab some new mounting points, or dent them into proper shape (assuming it wasn't too drastic.) I ask becuase as these bikes get older it gets harder to find tanks that aren't rusted badly, or even rusted through. I'm currently working on my '87's tank to remove all of the old lining and recoating it, but I was curious (for my second bike, who's tank is rusted through pretty badly) if any other models would fit.

Forks: I've heard (and understand from seeing the construction) that Hurricane forks can't take punishment quite like newer model Honda's forks can, do newer model forks have the same (or similar) dimensions?

Gauges: Are any newer model Honda gauges plug and play, or easily modified to work with the Hurricane wiring harness?

Thanks everyone!
-Matt

as far as i know, f2 and f3 tanks will fit but are shaped differently at the top. the sides i believe are the same. i do not know if they use the same gas caps as the 87-90 models.

as far as forks go, depends on what years and models. f2 and f3 forks are around the same length as 87-90. any usd sets will be shorter by an inch or more. this will wreck havoc with steering lock to lock and panel to clipon clearance unless risers or clipons with an offset are used. there are other slight ****les but those are the major issues. f4/i sets are shorter and so are 03-04 600rr sets. all fork tubes after 87-90 (39mm compared with 45mm for 600rr) get wider and the distance from center of forks also gets wider.

the nice thing about the honda steering head is that they are the same for almost all sportbike models. same bearings, same steerer tube, etc. so that is not a worry.

here is a link you can look at to see what you may get into if you do a fork upgrade. http://www.cbrextreme.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=4223

gauges are model run specific. but i am sure with some minor tweaking the f2/f3 guages could work. they are about the same size. and are analog all the way.

here is a pic of the backside of a f2 cluster.

F2 and up gas caps all have an outer rim and a middle removable portion. the outer part has hex bolts that connect it to the tank, the middle can be keyless or keyed; they are not compatible with the f1 for obvious reasons. through my experience an 89 gas tank and cap are needed to work together, they have a notch which is backwards to that of the other years; i know this because i have an 89 tank and no cap for it; 87 wont work. if a tank is rusty, not all the way through of course, but just surface rust you can have it cleaned and epoxy coated, or get a rust removal kit yourself.

ras122 used f2 gauges on his f1, i dont know the extent if any of the modifications he may have had to do to it, but he did also put on the 600rr upper; which has no meaning for the gauges themselves, but maybe as to their fitment.

Yeah, if I find an F2/F3 tank that isn't rusted through with a cap/key I might just pick it up and hopefully make it work.
