Smile clutch affects idle in Neutral??? FIXED!!!!!!!!!

:)Purchased a 1990 CBR600 and trying to get it running for the season. Confused by this:

Have rear tire off ground, get bike started with clutch in, revs around 1100rpm and is running smooth, instrument lights bright, temp guage working.
Let clutch out and tach goes to 5000rpm even tho bike is now chugging - no way it's revving at 5000. Can't give it any throttle or it'll sputter and die. Rear tire is not turning so it's not slipping into gear. Instrument lights start blinking and temp guage goes as high as it can.
Pull the clutch back in, goes back to running smooth and instrument lights are bright again.

New battery installed, but would a weak battery affect idling?
2 wires connected to right of clutch lever, go into housing w' choke/turns/highs/horn - what are they for?
Have read some on the regulator/rectifier - apparently a common problem. Sound like symptoms of one that is not working properly?

Any thoughts? Anyone have similar symptoms that they fixed?

Thanks for any help - great site!

UPDATE!!! FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After much reading and worry about possibly expensive electrical parts, and taking apart handlebars, switches, and connections... found a loose/broken GREEN GROUND WIRE under the tank! Once fixed for less than $0.50, ALL functions are normal and working great!!!

LESSON LEARNED... if you suspect an electrical glitch somewhere, start at the battery and make sure ALL connections are tight, starting with the green grounding wire and battery cables!!!

Thanks to all, hope this helps someone else one day.

Dawn

sounds like it might be some chaffed wires. try unpluggig the wires at the clutch switch. i think they are there so you dont start the bike in gear without the clutch pulled. definatly sounds like something electrical. follow the wires to the connectors, and see how everything looks.

i also replied to your pm about the mirrors...let me know if you need em

Will the bike start in neutral with the clutch out or only with the clutch pulled in?
Reason is all the components you described are all on the same circuit which is also tied in to the CDI . It makes perfect sense why the bike sputters and all the described gauges and lights go screwy. I think it has something to do with the neutral switch.

i've wondered about this.
my bike will only start in nuetral, but i dont have to pull in the clutch.
i cannot start the bike in gear even with the clutch pulled.
shouldn't i be able to hit the starter with the clutch pulled, or is it only supposed to start in neutral?

Kickstand switch maybe? Mine will start in gear, with the clutch when the kickstand is up. Wont do anything with it down, unless in neutral.

87-88 starts with clutch pulled in OR bike in neutral.
After 88 starts with clutch pulled in and kick stand up OR bike in neutral.
Tripicana should be able to start with clutch pulled in. Since you can start in neutral, that means that your clutch switch is bad OR disconnected.
MelloYello's bike works like it should.
Or MAYBE the f**king ground is bad!

ill have to look at the switch, the wiring is hooked up, but something could be up with that also.

ISIS - are you having problems when you pull the clutch lever, or when you let go of the lever?
did you try disconnecting the two wires at the clutch lever?
