1987 Hurricane to 2003 CBR600RR Conversion
The first thing I would ask is whether you have a hugger (fender) on the back? The reason I ask is even with an undertail you will have trouble keeping water out without a hugger. Some on here do not agree with this but it is the reason I have a hugger on the conversion (I am changing it to something more in keeping with the RR tho).
The undertail I made was just a test fit and now I am considering making something a out of sheet aluminum to get a better fit and finish. The piece I made in this thread was made out of a $4.99 Wal Mart black wastebasket that is textured polypropelene. It would work fine and is flexible enough to match the curves pretty nicely. It also is impact resistant.
The suggestion Mattson made is another alternative, but I would bet that it may not be a direct fit to a modified Hurricane unless the 954 subframe was mounted to your Hurricane. I've only seen one Hurricane where a different subframe was mounted to a Hurricane and it didn't look very good...to do this properly requires significant frame mods. fabrication and welding.

No the frame is full stock. If it was modified then i who'd not by it sins you never know how good the modification was unless it's been done by yourself or someone you trust.
Hi and thanks for the reply. If with hugger you are talking about the rear mudguard that is also a chain protector then yes. If you ask me its silly to remove it sins it has a fundamental practical use. So can u please be so kind as to give me instructions on how to bend it properly and what you did to fit it on the frame. Thanks in advance

It would be helpful if you could post a picture of your tail...particularly the underside. On the RR tail, there is a flange on the plastic underneath that I attached to. I planned to use fairing screws with compression rubber. Cutting the piece is pretty easy. I used a piece of cardboard to get the shape right and then used that as a template on the plastic. I cut it a little larger so I could try and curve it inward before drilling mounting holes.
Most of this type of fab work is trial and error and if you make a mistake you try again. There really isn't any way to give detailed dimensions because each situation is different with custom modifications. Take your time and think through it. I seriously just cut the piece and stuck it in there...it looks pretty good, but I think aluminum will be even better. I might change my mind once I get there...that's the fun of it
Yes the rear mudguard is what I was referring to. Has different names. Usually called a hugger here in USA. I think it's important to have one because of all the crap that the rear tire can kick up, but many think they look bad on sport bikes...that's why they sell "fender eliminator" kits...but even with those you have an open area by the shock and into the back of the engine compartment...hard to keep this clean and can destroy moving parts back there.

Here are some pictures that might help.

I also made a cover that goes below the front of the tail. This piece was made from the same Wal Mart waste basket. Notice how the texture matches the OEM Honda cover...I wanted to cover this area because the RR has a pipe cover here. This is to show how you can make custom parts for your own application...simple tools and cheap materials.

Since we are talking about hugger's and rear fenders I thought I would post my little project swing arm for the RR conversion. I was going to wait until I got things painted and started putting it all together to post this but seems like as good of time as any to post it.
I was concerned about the look of the Hurricane rear fender on the RR conversion bike. It just didn't look right. The straight swing arm also just looks a little off too. Being stuck with the smaller tire I wanted to come up with a way to get a better look back there.
I started looking at options to change things and came up with the idea of modifying a F2 fender and chain guard. The size difference is only about 1/2 inch and the F2 has covers that match up with the swing arm and give it a bit more bulk to the look.
The plan is to do it all in silver with the fender portion painted black. Again keeping with the RR look in terms of colors.
Here's a picture of where I am on this. I had to make some brackets and tap some holes to match the F2 part up to the F1 swing arm. I am still working on the fender shape and plan on cutting more away on the sides to get it closer to the RR fender shape.
