RE: ? for those of you who went to dragstrip
I've been a couple of times to a 1/8th mile track and this is what I've experienced on my stock bike:
With stock gearing, I was in the low 7's, but don't remember the exact time. I had some trouble getting it going because the engine would always lug on take off. The next time I went, I dropped 1 tooth on the countershaft sprocket. My best time was 6.97 seconds at 106 mph. Before I went the other night, I added an additional 2 teeth to the rear sprocket and opened a whole new can of worms. The bike was impossible to launch aggressively because it would immediately wheelie. Wheelie through first, wheelie again through second and then part of third. My 60 foot time was unbelievably slow because I had to let off the gas to get the front end back down, but it made up for lost time by finishing at 6.94 seconds at 107 mph. If I could keep the front end down and keep it pinned, I feel it would be 1/2 second faster. I tried short-shifting the moment it stood up, but this didn't make my time any faster. Any one out there got any tips for quicker times? I got creamed by extended swing-armed busas on takeoff, but don't want to extend mine. And our track will let you race against anything. I went up against a couple of drag cars with wheelie bars. On take off, they were gone the moment the lights turned green, but by the end of the track I had all but caught up. And for everyday riding, the new gearing is a blast to ride! It's like riding a 150 mph 2-stoke motocrosser. Thank god for the speedo healer...
