strange but big problem
Well I knowpretty well that things on road CAN bend rims. One of my friends hit a R&R crossing and bent the$h1t out of his rim. he didnt wreck or anything drastic like your friend, but his rim has a very large bent/flat spot
K well im not here to argue what 8 people saw but bending a rim i can understand but when a 8 in chunk flys off of its and then bends another piece of it at a 90 degree angle I would think theres a problem
Sorry, not trying to argue. But I find it hard to believe. I believe totally what you saw and what happened. But what I am thinking is maybe earlier (coulda been days/weeks/months) he hit a pothole, R&R crossing, something that bent him rim. He likely didn't even know it happened. Then on your ride, rim and tire just couldn't keep a good bead anymore, and air pressure was likely instantly lost causing accident.
Best of luck to you tho with all this.

ZDUB, Im not trying to disprove your claim.Just a little info that it will be very hard to prove to Honda they had adefect.
A friend of mine lost control of his bike in a corner and his bike slid into a guardrail. his rear rim hit the end post of the guardrail and it looked just like the one pictured. The rim had a piece missing from thecenter and an area where the lip stayed intact with the rim and it was bent up similar to yours pictured. this was an impact break of the rim. I have a feeling thats what Honda is going to tell your friend. All manufacturers go through impact and durability testing of thier products. The Rim manufacturer is going to have a ton of documented impact failures and they will look very similar to the one pictured. It will be very hard to prove that this was a failure on their part. You can hire a lawyer, have the rim tested and see if it meets the requirements for thier process. All extremely expensive. But its an option.
The rim material can and does bend. it doesnt shatter as you said. Just look at how many of these rims get bent from potholes or anything. you can even send these rims into places and have them straightened. The rims arent pot metal... they are cast aluminum.
Again, not trying to disprove you. It really sucks what happened and I feel for your friend... but its going to be a long road to prove Honda in the wrong.

ok, well thanks for all the comments guys. I am however going by what i saw an others saw despite where i might be wrong on the characteristics of the rims. I just cant figuire out how i see the rim break on a straight road and then see him go down. but again thanks for the chat just thought it was odd. we'll see how Honda takes it after they inspect it
ill give 10to1 odds on the outcome here. them coming to look at this wheel is a simple formality. their findings are going to back up what they already believe to be the truth.
Well whats the worst that could happen tbagr if those 10 to 1 odds go in his favor he gets a new bike if they dont he still gets one with the insurance lol so either way just dont matter.
