Mix & match engine case halves?
So I have a 04 that was stolen and recovered layed over. The bike overall is in ok condition (damaged fairings, levers and whatnot) but the worst damage was about a 2 square inch section of case was destroyed. Ive come across a bare engine case that I can swap all the internals into, but I was wondering if its possible to just swap the lower case over and call it a day? I know that the main journals are in there, and I believe the bearings are matched to the case if I read correctly, so can I get bearings for my replacement case and use the lowers in my new case with my original upper case?
Basically is there a cheaper way to do this than either paying ~1500 for swapping cases+ rebuild or buying another motor?

The shortest answer is no. The cases are a machined match pair. Having said that, I'm sure it has been done before with a measure of success. It may all fit and work, but it will probably never be in tolerance by the book and may never be just quite right.
