Default Down 1/2 a quart in 600 miles

Well i just did my break in oil change yesterday and the oil was a half of a quart less then then the manual calls for. I only got 2 3/4 quarts out of it. I went to the dealers service dept. and they looked at me like i was dumb when I asked them about it.I asked about the rings and he played dumb and said they had not seen anything yet. It's not a big deal but this thing uses more oil then my semi does with over 1 million miles on it. I go 10-12k and use less then a gallon.

I did my break in awhile ago but i wasnt down any. It was nasty looking though. Check your oil before you go out riding... never good to be riding 1/2 a quart down.

Just keep an eye on it, and see how much it goes down before the next change. There are lots of stories of these bikes using a lot of oil since the 1krr was introduced, even more on the 08's. Honda says there's only a problem if it exceeds a quart in 800 miles (i think that's the number). If you use more than that they will try to fix it under warranty.

If your dealer isn't aware of the issue, then either they are trying to cover it up, or are pretty clueless and I wouldn't trust them working on my bike. Do you have another shop nearby that services Hondas? Sorry to say, 1/2 a quart in 600 miles is pretty oil-hungry but well within tolerance, and seems to be a normal amount for an 08.

I dont think it should be down any. I mean come on theyre failrly new bikes. They shouldnt leak oil already. I have a 99 f4 and it doesnt leak or burn any oil and neither does my 04 1000rr

I'm sure its not a leak he's referring to. Its the typical oil usage problem, there's a 100-some page thread on one of the other forums about it.

I didn't measure the exact amount I pulled out of mine at 600 but I do check the level every time I ride and haven't had any problems with my 08.

I heard that if you beat it after 300 you have less oil usage problems. Maybe you just need to be a little more aggressive with it. :-)

it is possible i ride the hell out of mine and i have to regularly add oil. it uses quite a bit (maybe a quart every thousand miles). i have spoken to two different dealers and they all say that the factory says that 1quart per 1k miles or 1 month is within tolerance.

i personally dont understand how it should use ANY but that is just my uneducated opinion.

I've never heard of any 4 stroke motor vehilcle that burns 33% of it's oil capacity and is considered OK. IMO... it's too expensive for Honda to recall given it's inconsistency of failure. So there will most likely not be a recall unless a widespread 1000rr engine failure occurs, or a lawsuit is filed.

Regardless, you would think Honda, (as green as their car company seems at least), wouldn't appreciate being associated with the emissions of a motorcycle burning a quart of oil every 1000 miles.
