Default Brake question

One of my friends recently wrecked my bike and broke off the front master cylinder. Is there more to replacing that particular part than just bolting it on? do i need to do any bleeding or adding of fluid? Safety is my concern, i will take it and get it done by a shop, but if there just gonna put a new one in its place i think ill enjoy saving a buck or two and getting my hands dirty. Bottom line i want it done right.
