Yep it sure is stock 3 1/2 inch
Has a michelin pilot "race" 170 55 17 on it ...... seems really old too
The 55 aspect ratio makes it have shorter sidewalls I'm guessing - interesting !
most current day 170's are a 60 & 180's are a 55
Buying Shinko Verge 011 tires for it in 120 70 17 & 170 60 17 ($215) / set
and another Verge set with a 180 rear for my 93.
My neighbor just grabbed a Verge set for his "new" 1000F (see saloon)
at same ($215) deal

A 170 on an 87 rim would be a DANGEROUS choice Sprock.
It'll be unstable and plain unsafe at any speed................ on that rim
Be a bit like fitting a Nascar tyre to a tricycle. Too much wall movement, heat build-up and that's assuming it'll go in with no clearance issues, although I suspect it will. The bike handling won't be good atall atall.
Go for the 150 MAX width.

Hmmmm as I said it's a weird sized 170 - 55 on it - short sidewalls
I'll measure it tonight robbie !
Yeah Pete the left ear up by the screen was broken , when I took it
off a lousy fiberglass repair was in behind it. Carefully pulled it apart
and will repair correctly with two light steel / rods and JBweld
it will never break there again. Also below the headlight has cracks
and will get the same treatment which as always worked well for me
- strong and very light - basically welding rods with the flux taken off
and JBWelded in behind - stronger than all hell !
But in general the whole upper 87 cowl is much lighter and more flimsy
than a 90 or 93 - guage of plastic is much much thinner - which imo
is why they crack and break up so much - that and the way the mount
points are setup and the fact the weight of the headlamp unit and
windshield are totally supported "only" by the cowling - all contributing
factors for degradation and cracks over time - even the mid fairing hangs
off the front of it adding more stress !
Bad design - better on later models

I had a 160 on my 87 rim and the shape looked terrible. I ended up going with a 150 and in my non expert opinion thats the biggest you can go if planning on turning aggressively.
Heres the 160 you can see theres no shoulder
