CB is not the designation for an inline four, since all (most) of the parallel twins of the 60's and 70's, CB 350, CB360, CB450 and CB500 and others carried the CB moniker. Plus the CBX of the late 70's was an inline six.

Once I had red Honda history, and their first machine was small onboard engine for bicycles. They named the small engine "Cub". In 1940's, Honda started making real motorcycles and code name was "CB" form "Cub". Since then, Honda names most street bike "CBxxxx" and R is added for the bikes dressed with cowlings. In addition, CBX is more like super machine rather than suport. And, golden rule for CB is bikes must have 4 stroke engine.
