Default trans problem

i have a 88 1000 hurricane with 14k. that pops out of gear under hard acceleration. this will happen in 1st and second gear. i really don't know if this happens in the other gears. do you have any suggestions on what to do or adjust. thanks,

84 model? Eh?

Hardly any mileage (14k?), but worn clutch shoes are a good sign. Cheapest possible fix is try sme heavy weight oil and see if that helps.

If it's poping out of gear, it's not a clutch problem. Popping out of gear is a sign of worn dawgs. This is a gear with protrusions on sides that allow it to engage with a gear next to it. As they wear, heavy torque causes them to kick out to the side. Only way to fix is replace them. Have to split the case to do it. The cost of parts is not expensive. The labor is.

worst case scenario is:
1) the dogs on the transmission gears are shot and you'll need a new second gear on both transmission shafts
2) the shifter drum is worn
3) the shifter forks are worn (unlikely as this would affect all gears)

What causes these dwags to wear out? Is it due to improperly shifting? I normally dont use the clutch after 2nd gear but always use it on the down-shifing side with a little blip from the throttle.

If its only first and second, I'm leaning towards bads dogs on gears.

The dogs wear normally over time (metal on metal at so many rpms will do that). Trying to jam into the next gear will speed up the wear. But it takes a lot to do that. If the bike is from the mid 80's, Honda was also having problems with the Sabre and Magnas at that time going through the lower gears. Dave Dodge Racing actually re-welds the gears (undercuts them) so that while they change gears a little harsher, they don't pop out of gear. This was a couple of years ago so I don't know if he still has any affiliation. You can always check the v4hondabbs.com forums for drp123.
