Do you know how long ago the oil was changed, and what type was used? If you're feeling really froggy, you might want to take the clutch apart and see how worn the plates are.
Another simple thing to check could be clutch cable adjustment and lubrication.

I would check the clutch cable adjustment first. Can you get the bike up to neutral? If yes, can you get straight to second from neutral? I can shift my bike to second from first without the clutch at the right RPM's so I would that unrelated to the clutch slipping...

make sure battery has enough juice to start bike/naturally, make sure kill switch is in on position.and about the tail....u havent even started ridin the bike and already u wanna make it look pretty. remember the sprite commercials, "image is nutting, thirst is everything, obey ur thirst!" well, master riding, then worry about moding the tail. no point in finding out shoe prices if u just started crawling, feel me?!!
