+1 here - that's why the facination with the Nurburgring in Germany.

 

Top speed isn't what it's all about for me , I love the twisty bits and acceleration between them . To me a straight is the shortest dullest distance between exciting curves , I even tend to slow down on the straights!

Where I choose to ride you'll be lucky to get a short burst at 80-90mph and then it'd have to be at the crack of dawn , so no traffic and on the verge of stupidly risky! As already said , that sort of riding is for the track .

On the motorway/Highway there are so many cops and speed cameras these days , it'd only be a matter of time before you lost your license and I'd loose my job along with it as well!

What the hell would I tell the wife? I lost my license 'cos I was doin' 160!BTW kids we're livin' on beans for a few months 'cos I'm broke? For those reasons I chicken out long before I get near the top speed of the bike.
Would be interesting on a track of airfield though!

 

Ooo! Ooo! Time for an old fart story! Way back when 60 mph was the epitome of speed my dad ran his own shop. He specialized in tune ups, carburetor, electrical and speedometer work. In fact, he calibrated speedometers for the highway patrol at the time.

One day a customer came in complaining that his new car wouldn't pull the Airport Hill at 60 mpg. It only did 57. He wanted a complete tune up. Dad went through the car and fine tuned it. They guy came back and said he'd made it up the hill at 59 and had Dad go through it again. Dad did. The guy came back. Dad went through it again. This went on for a few days and finally Dad told him there was one more thing he could do, but it would take some time. Come back for the car in two days. He then took the speedometer out, set it to read four or five mph hour fast, and replaced it. Result? One ecstatic customer. And a world of praise for Dad, the premiere tune up man in town. True story.

As for top end on the CBR1000F? It's all been said above. But I'll say it again.

My speedometer is 5 to 6 mph hour optimistic as measured against a GPS unit at 70 mph. It probably becomes more optimistic as speed increases. So how do you really know how fast you're traveling?

The original tested at 162 in the bike magazines, it's doubtful the bikes become faster as they age unless significant engine work is done. 170 on a stock 1000F? Nah, won't happen.

Next, top speed testing on public roads is really stupid. And dangerous, not just to the rider, but to everyone else on the road. Find a long deserted runway or take it to the track.

And finally, what's the big deal with the bike's top speed? Does it make one more of a man (or woman)? Maybe it's just something some people have to find out about their bike. It does seem to be a recurring question among kids that look my bike over. "How fast does it go?" "Wow, the speedometer goes to 185. Will it really go that fast?" I can truthfully answer, "I don't know. I've never tried to find out." Not that the bike hasn't seen triple digits since I've owned it, it has. But a *****-to-the-wall all out speed run? Nope. Not interested.

 

Late to the party, and not exactly on topic, but I hit 125 at redline in third gear the other day on my 93. It took NO TIME to get there, and it was way too fast. But I just wanted to feel it once. That's all I know.

 

I've taken mine pretty far up, that's all I'm gonna say.

Wait, one more thing....
You know those signs that show you your speed and remind you of the speed limit? Well.... when you fly by them in the upper 100's, they blink these funny little hash mark looking things on the dsplay, and they don't show you your speed.
I was disappointed.

 

I would readily say you have been there Dylan........once you hit the upper 130's on up
it becomes flash in the pan stuff with the funny little hash marks......like you said

Okay I have to fess up .......when I first got it last year, I had access to a
former local AFB and topped her right out, clock 149....actual 142 by the
gun we had at the time..........Guy I got her from was with me.

Wonder how she'd play out now with the gearing changes I've made
Love to try it again with an 18/38........reckon we'd bust a buck and three
quarters at least if not more.

I'd be interested to see what the gear change would bring it up to. You'd definitely need some space, though....

We have a gun at work, too, and I've often thought about getting one of the Harley guys to clock me... lol..

What I was thinking was that I'll lure him in with telling him we'll check his bike first, and I'll run the gun and tell him he's going 45mph no matter how hard he runs it... LOL...
