Default stock tire size on a 96

I have a 170/60/17. Is this the right stock size? What brand is good value?

170/60/17 is the correct size, you can fit a 180/55/17 but slows the steering down a little. I stick with 170's and either fit bridgestone bt57 or michelin macadam 100's not sure if these are on sale in US though. Any good brand name dual compound sport touring tyre should be fine.

The guy at the dealership says he runs sportechs on his, but it cost twice as much as the daytons. Also what about the racing pulloffs on ebay? Is there a positive of putting 180/55/17 on the rear?

Avon 45-46 combo works the best for me. I get around 5000 miles from them. With sportecs I average less than 2000 miles. I wouldn't use race takeoffs due to the heat cycles they have been through, and the fact that the Avons have never slipped on me and I touch pegs down often. The Avons have been the best tire I've had on my cbr1000f.

I doubt I will ever be dragging pegs... I am to scared to go fast and lay the big thing over that far.

I was too at first, but with riding almost 30000 miles on it, I feel like the bike is part of me now. I know it sounds silly, but after that many miles I know everything the bike will do in almost every situation.

Trust me on the tires, I've put 11 sets on it in the last two years. I used Metzelers, Pilot Sports, Bridgestones, and dunlops. The Avons are the best I've used.

When I had the CB750, I had a favourite corner I used to scrap pegs on every time
The XJ650 I had afterwards had more clearance so I luck out on that corner, The XJ had other attributes.

I had Metzlers which really stuck to the road well but didn't last very long. I decided to give Bridgestones new BT020 a try, it's their new ST series. So far I've got 6,000 miles on for the season as of today and I have just started developing a little flat spot on the rear, I can probably do another 2k on them. My Metzlers started cuping at 3,000 miles and where toast by 4,000. I've been dragging peges on the BT020 and they seem to hold up well and are great in the rain. I've heard some great feed back on the Avon Azaro-ST, that will be my next set.
