Default Rev limiter and other facts

I bought the February, 1990 issue of Motorcyclist magazine off ebay. They test the 1990 CBR 1000. Of course they loved it, but the magazine says this about the ignition:

"The ignition also functions as a rev limiter. Official redline is 10,500 rpm: if the rider overspins the mill, cylinders two and three are cut off while one and four are retarded. If the rider persists, the whole system shuts down at 11,600."

I never knew that, but as you all know, anything electric can and will go bad on a bike. I guess it's in the spark unit, and I don't know how it works, but I don't see why this can't happen at some other rpm. So if you experience this, check out the ignition.

Some other tidbits from the test: 10.74 in the quarter; 60mph on the speedo is actually 54.5; top speed-160mph; 37.8 average mpg.

That's 10%,
If you put a bigger tire on the front, would that compensate?

Since the speedo reads off the front sprocket, you could get larger tires or change the sprockets. Stock on mine is 120/70 front, and 170/60 rear. They may make a 170/70 rear that would be slightly larger, but I don't know what front you could get. All you have to know is when you are doing 176 mph, you are really only doing 160. Doesn't yours use kilometers?

Yes.
I have a mate who owns a car mechanical workshop, I might get him to test it on the dyno machine.
Will have to be careful as I sure the bike will demonstrate how well it can accelerate if it slips off.

Is the Speedo cable or electric (no bike at the moment to look at it), if it’s electric, you can buy a black box that will change the speed reading for you, they use them on four wheel drives when changing to oversize tires.

The speedo is cable driven off the front sprocket. A plastic coupling goes over the sprocket nut. The cable from the speedo goes into a geared 90 degree "transmission". A tab from this transmission goes into the plastic coupling. I've broken two plastic couplings. If yours needed to be super accurate, the little gears in the transmission could possibly be changed.
