Default starter clutch access??

Hello CBR ers, have had sluggish starting for a while now, replaced batt, checked alt output; all ok, understand from past threads that probs such as this can be sorted by checking/ replacing starter cluth / damper. Also have read threads saying you dont need to split engine, but with very little description as to how to go about this. My bike is currently in shed... alt bolts and casing loose now, but how does it come out without damaging internals? haynes manual vague on this......[&:] any info gratefully received...D.

1st hook up a spare fresh battery (not the bikes) direct tothe starter and see if it is still slugish.

If it pull the starter and do the checks in the manual on the armature & bushes to rule it out.

If ya do a search a dude posted a method of backing off the Alternator tensioner to loosen the chain enough to remove the starter clutch & Alternator Dampener.

Unfortunatley I dont how how to test to see if its the Dampener or Clutch thats causing the problem, but its probably one of those thing where you might as well replace it while u are in there.

Hi, it depends which model you have. If you have a pre-FK model (with the vented alternator cover) it is quite simple. If your model is post FK (smooth alternator cover), then while it is possible, it is really really difficult and quite honestly isn't that much more hassle to take the engine out (a day) strip and repair it (a day) and put it back in (a day).

If you look at the split casings pic you can see the alt tensioner behind the gear cogs. If you have split the two haves then remove the gears and use a pin to lock of the tensioner. If you hav'nt then, with the sump case off you can remove the oil pump and this now gives you access to the tensioner. When you pull the alternator out ( not forgetting the small shaft nut which is located below the starter motor ( behind a small covering)) there are holes in the damper and shaft that need to line up when being reassembled. The starter clutch can be pulled away using a bearing puller. Remember the order of the components and the direction that they go in regards to the damper assembly. When you put the alternator onto the engine then you must also ensure that the starter cog runs free with the starter clutch (ie. the teeth of the cogs mesh together freely) and the alternator pushs home easily. Good luck
