Default Sprocket Sizes and Gearing Change for Touring?

Hi Guys and Girls,
Has anyone changed their gearing on their hurricane for touring and if so what size sprockets did you find made high speed cruising more relaxing by lowering the revs a bit, or saving fuel?
I changed the size of my sprocket/s on my last huricane but it was years ago and can't remember how much i changed them by. Also, does anyone happen to know what size the original sprockets are?

Cheers, Gaz

GAZ , have an 18 tooth on mine on the front and a 40 on the rear
bring the rpm waaaaay down for touring. Putting an 18 up front
which is as big as she can handle means grinding the chain tab at the
rear of the front sprocket to get the clearance you need for an 18 tooth.

Let me go and find that thread I had with all the PIC's ......here we go

https://cbrforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=96094&highlight=tooth

I recommend you do it for touring ....better mpg better touring less rpm
but you'll need a gps cuz your speedo will be outta whack

Worth noting I've run the 18 with a 44, 42 and 40 rear ......recommend
a 40 rear for long high speed touring runs you won't believe how smooth
it is with an 18.......oh and as you drop down teeth sizes on the rear
obviously your rear wheel has to slide right back to take up the chain
slackening.

added edit : I would absolutely try an 18 tooth ..... you have to actually
experience it to appreciate what it does !.....like night and day imo

Gaz, if you haven't played around with it yet, try this gearing commander.
It's a pretty cool little program to figure out ratios, rpms at different speeds, etc. Just load up the 1000F and then virtually change sprockets.
I'm not that into going as extreme as 18/40, but that's all personal opinion. I was pretty happy with the stock 17/42, but I'm running 17/44 atm. If it were me, I would probably just come down a couple in the rear. Like I said, though... you can crunch the numbers and see how it would work out. Are you sure your gearing is stock?

Thanks guys,
I'm not sure which i fancy but both of you helped greatly. I was maybe planning a 39 on the rear as i think that's what i did last time. According to the gearing calculator that should alter my revs in top gear at 80mph from 5k to 4.6k and is a 7% difference. Allowing for the fact that speedos usually read up to 10% too high, the 7% lower speedo reading for the 3 teeth missing on the rear should actually make my speedo something like accurate (I think, lol)

I'm not sure if i want to go with a bigger front as well as a smaller rear and as 3 teeth off the rear does a bit more than one on the front i might go that way.

Hey Sprock, why does the 18 make it smoother? Is it just the higher gearing as if so then the same should happen with a smaller rear?

Default smoother

GAZ

just does more teeth engaged on the chain less slapping about and clunky
I reckon it made a big difference.

Stock 17 is normal

16 a bit more ratchet noise
15 a lot more ratchet type noise

Of course ya have to have your lid off to hear it

The 18 though ......you can feel the smoothness shifting and generally all around ...............really recommend ya give it a go if you are taking long
runs in the EU

Thanks Sprock,
Me and Gra (GMC) were out the other day for a spin on the twins, lol, (pics in rides folder) and i noticed that Gra's is doing 80mph at 4.5k revs and mine does 80mph at 5k revs. We looked at his back sprocket and it only had one tooth less than standard (41) so he must be running an 18 front as well to be 500 revs down on me. The gearing calculator agrees with this ratio too My plan is to put my sat nav on Gra's bike and check his speedo with the sat nav speed and if it's corrected the speedo by removing the usual exageration then i'll go with 18/41 but if it's still a bit high then i'll go 18/40. If i'm going to change the sprockets then why not use it to set my speedo to be right
That's the plan anyway, lol.

Gaz
