Default speedo broken

I only have 9950 miles on my 1990 1000f and the speedo quit working after I reset the trip meter. Got the cable off and it isn't broken so I am thinking it is the speedo. I am not too mechanically inclined so looking for some advice as to other things to think about. It has been a rewarding challenge to get all the plastics off and see what is going on inside.
On a side note there is some rust spots on the headers, so what should I do with that issue. Thanks

I think you may e better off asking this in the general 'Hurricane' section rather than the 'How To's' , you'll get more of a response

Moved it for you.......
If you need a replacement speedo, look for either an 89-92 or 87/88
the later model 93 on has a different cable connection and won't fit.
If you can find an 87/88 it will work, but faceplate may need modification.

Before you go down the expensive route - have a look at the small plastic drive coupling that sits on the front sproket nut and drives the speedo cable.

Mine got rounded off and which resulted in no speedo.

Only a few $$ to replace but much cheaper than a speedo.

Thanks for the info. Like I said I am not to mechanically inclinded and now I guess that I am not to forum savvy either. I am assuming the small plastic drive coupling that sits on the front sproket nut and drives the speedo cable is where the cable attaches to the engine. Again sorry for my lack of... well smarts, but I am learning and your help is greatly appreciated.

You assume correctly and good going for a non mechanically inclined Guy. They do
indeed get "rung" out and could quite likely the issue as Deano mentioned.

One screw the speedo cable frees from the sprocket cover.
Three bolts and the sprocket cover comes off. ( don't lose spacers & note bolt lengths) for reassembly.

You will see the white drive "cap" coupling that slots onto the sprocket bolt. This is what
can get rounded out.

Difficulty task rating 1- 10 ........ I'd say a 3 !

Note putting sprocket cover back on ....... you have to push it back on hard
as the clutch relaxes making the cover sit off .

^^ Yep, it's most likely the plastic gear that rides on the countershaft sprocket bolt.
Probably either rounded or cracked.

Here is a How-To....
LINKY

edit: make sure to take note of exactly which bolts to remove to get the sprocket cover off.
It's really not a hard job at all.

Sitting at work and reading all this great info you guys are sending my way. Can't wait to get home and get to work, there is nothing worse than having a great day to ride and have the bike not rideable. It makes me feel like I know what I am doing. I will let you know how it all turns out. Thanks again!!

A broken speedo should not stop you riding.

We only do three speeds - FAST, VERY FAST and OH ****

Get out and ride - haha

Default speedo broken

I followed the steps outlined in the link, work great and I got to the plastic nut which doesn't look too bad. I attached photo for opinions. It didn't seem to slip when I put it on the bolt and spun it by hand, but maybe I can't simulate real time that way. I also attached cable to speedo, turned key on and attached my drill to other end and was able to get speedo to move and the trip meter did turn over a couple tenths of a mile after a couple of minutes so I think the speedo is OK so off to local Honda shop to order a part.
