well it really depends on your setup, like after market exhaust?after market air filter? does the carbs have a jet kit? if you think its too rich haul a plug an look see if they as black as your boot or a nice light brown or whitish, black-rich,brown- good, white- lean
while your there might as well make sure they are gapped proper. now if its all good there its possible its something else but id check all plugs. now if your high alt you want it to be alittle on the rich side so the air fuel screws should be around 2 1/2 turns out, if not right around 2 turns out then give her a shot an see how it works

to what dpasch said...
When you next take her out ... warm her up ...turn her off ...try to start her and if she is stubborn ....grab the throttle and twist it to the stop ... hit the starter and see if she fires ...but be quick to spin the throttle down once she fires mate .. this will tell you if shes getting to much fuel immediately...
yup...never use the choke on these old girls when they are warm....you will flood them in an instant..

Yer , I recon shes definitely getting to much gunie juice !
Pull your Air Filter and see if it is ok and clean ?, or if it is a std one ? some KNN oiled ones can case chit to happen if they are un maintained...
BTW-
Did you check the bloody plug color yet ??
If you are not the sort of guy that is good with carbs ... or do not have the tools , you might wanna get them done at a shop near you ...
To balance and set them correctly , you need some gauges and a good experienced touch ...
If you want to have a slash at it yourself ...check the plugs FIRST to see if just one ? or all of them are running rich first !! before you go hacking in !!
Let us know what yu find mate ..we are not mind readers ... LOL
Orr ..ok we know Pete (Shadow) is ...
