Default riveted portion of petock leaks

Hello,

The title kinda' says it all. My petcock leaks from the riveted portion just behind the petcock dial.

Has anyone drilled that out, fixed the guts and put it back together with screws? I've seen crude mention of doing this in searches but nothing concrete about it, nor what needed renewing inside that housing.

Any thoughts, alternatives (a new petcock is too pricey) or ideas are welcome.

Thank ya!

EDIT: '90 CBR 1000F, non-Cali.

I have a leak in mine as well. '88 1000f. Problem is that the only thing I can find to do with that year is replace it all together and that is quite pricey.

I did it. I drilled the rivets and tapped the holes. I put in a new o-ring and replace the rotted rubber gasket with holes in it with a Teflon one I made. The petcock is a little stiff to turn but, it does not leak and did not cost $90 I fixed with with stuff I had.

Thank you for sharing your experience.

How hard was it to make the replacement part? What does the part look like? Is it like a honeycomb with 4 holes?

Thank you for the other replies as well. I passed on the ebay unit. And I'm glad that I'm not alone with the leak.

I dont even care about having a petcock - if I was smart enough to figure out how to run up something to screw into the tank (in lieu of the petcock) and a universal on/off valve, I'd be happy.

I might just have to go find some lava soap.

I did not think it was hard to make the part But, I fix things for a living so your mileage may vary. Yes it looks like you describe.

Default petcock

Mine leaked when I got it. The o-ring was just covered with corrosion. I just cleaned it and used some red grease (I use it at work for transmission seals) on the o-ring. I tried to find one that matched but was unable to find an exact match... anyway it's been leak free all summer. The only problem I had really was finding screws that were flat enough... it would rub on the handle and it took a while to find the right screw for it.
