Default Rim options...

I know it has been brought up before but... My '88 hurricane 1000 has the crappy(skinny) 3.5 rear rim. I looked for a lower profile tire that would stay in the 140 series width... no such luck. So I want to start looking for a newer wider rims for the bike. I know the '90's and newer rims will bolt on with little mods, or you can swap out the whole swingarm(even easier). But will the swingarm off of a newer Cbr 1000rr or a 954rr work on our bikes. I would like to have at least a 170/55 rear profile tire. I'd like to trick my bike out like one of those nice 'busa's. Before them these bikes were the big dogs. I don't know why there isn't that many fixed up and cruzing around. If I just swap the rear rim out with a '90's 1000f will it hurt the handling of my bike if I don't change the front rim and tire width? Once I learn a little more about the bike Hopefully I'll become an asset to the site rather than an dumba@#. LOL! Thanks for any info. Love the site so far!

chuck....

read this thread https://cbrforum.com/m_97021/tm.htm

go to the site where i put my mods... http://hurricane1000.sportbikeworld.com/index.html

the home, about and photo page are the only ones with any pertinent content...

and sorry for the pop-ups...it is a free site... the info on putting a wider rim on your bike is there.

if you want a different style of wheel from another honda bike, do a parts search for the SPROCKET SIDE SPACER on your bike, and the donor bike. if the part is the same i cant think of a reason why you couldnt use it on your bike. i am pretty sure the 1100xx, 900rr, and possibly the super hawk are compatable, as well as the spirit 750 but who would want a 16" spoke wheel on a sportbike?

our swingarms are just as wide as any honda liter class sportbike made through 2000, and possibly the same as the 2006's (i just never measured).

stick with your swingarm, get a couple washers, move your brake arm, and enjoy the added grip of a 180 rear tire... you should also get a wider front rim/tire, but we can cross that bridge later...

if you have any questions, ask away...

Chuck, i put a 5.5" - 180 on the back of my '87 from a '93 cbr, did the front also, easy as... followed advice from 'hurricane1000', i reckon it handles better and looks a lot better, see pic...

Default RE: Rim options... still hunting.

I started to do some number matching on my computer tonight... The rear axle bolt from any year 1100xx blackbird is the same as our hurricanes. So this wheel should bolt up.... but The brake rotor is a different part number. I couldn't find any info that let's me know the circumference of the rotor. I know it is a completly different design. But manufacturers change the looks of things so the numbers change. My question is... Are the blackbirds rotors the same size as our hurricanes? If so this could be another wheel to hunt for for swapping out my original skinny rims. It's hard to find parts for the hurricane... When you do a search you get all kinds of hits on the blackbirds.

from the looks of the 2 rotors (1100xx and 1000f) they are both 6 bolt hubs, and i would bet that your 1000f rotor would bolt on the 1100xx rim, or even possibly use the 1100xx rotor. measure both very carefully before you try this.... brakes are kinda necessary...
