Default Repacking Can

I planned to repack my Can today.
Can anyone tell me if I need to repack?

By the looks of that, I would say yes. Many manufactures say that cans should be repacked after only 30+ hours of use. In my opinion, it is not the exterior of the packing material. As I noticed in your pic, the inner area of the packing is what makes the difference. I just repacked my can after only having 6800 miles. When I did it, I noticed that the inner layer that lies directly around the baffle had become burnt. that process degrades the sound deadening ability as the molecules of the packing material become "smushed" or compressed. This allows more sound to rumble around in the can and doesn't actually pass through the fibers of the material. Also, How tightly you wrap the material around the baffle also goes against how well the can will allow sound to omit throughout the can chamber.

I looked at it this way, when I did it, it made a definitive sound difference and the packing material was only 10.00. I used FMF's 4 stroke material.

When you go to re-pack dont use fibreglass as it doesnt last very long. There is a ceramic fibre product on the market that lasts much longer.

Trips is correct. The ceramic fiber lasts alot longer. The only reason I did mine with FMF's stuff was that I got a ticket for too loud exhaust and they gave me a statement of corrections on defective equipment paper. This basically said that if I get it fixed and prove it, it would eliminate the ticket.

As to your answer of how to remove the core. Most cans have rivets or screws that hold them on to the baffle or mid pipe. Look at where the outer shell of the can meets the midpipe. There should be rivets or a screw that hold it to a ring of some kind. Remove those rivets or screws and slide the outer shell off the baffle. Repack, replace.

Most chain hardware stores like a home depot or lowes, have this stuff called something like firesafe which is between what the inexpensive packing and the ceramic packing. It really boils down to how you want to go about it. cheap, need it quick, or do it based on the advice of others combined with your decision.

Best of luck! Let the board know how it turns out.

Repack after 30 hours? Dude, that's only 1800 miles @ 60 mph. I've done that on a single trip!
So if I owned a Ducati, and had and aftermarket can, I would be either repacking the can, or adjusting the valves every couple of weeks..... LOL
I'm glad I own a Honda!

Funny this subject came up.

I just repacked my cans as well.. When I pulled mine apart it looked just like the photo your had posted on your but my Yoshi's were LOUD!! I read the instructions (Oh crap, don't laugh) and it stated plainly "The packing should NOT be to the outer wall of the muffler. If it is, then it has expanded and needs replacing. This made me feel better because I packed mine and wrapped it tight as they said you should and the distance between the outerwall and int packing actually had about 1" of space. The difference to me isn't as noticeable because of the deep growl of the yoshi's, but my friends say they can't hear me unless I'm close. In the past people could hear me several blocks away ripping around. I'm sure the cops could hear me too!!! Ahhhhh..

I wish I had read about the different types of packing, I put fiberglass back in it. If I knew there was something that lasted longer, I would have bought that instead. I just got back from my trip and did 1,500 miles, total for that month was almost 3K. The pipes still sound good though so there is no way I'm gonna repack them yet! hehehe.
