Default rear shock settings

Hi as part of the rebuild of my 87 model I installed a rear shock from a 91 model off a low milage bike because the original 87 shock had lost all of its damping. Can anyone let me know what preload and damping settings they find best. I weigh 100kgs and ride solo.

3 or 4 clicks back from stiffest assuming the shock is good

I'm 74 Kg and ride with mine just above the softest setting.
When ever I wind it up harder than that I get bounced out of the saddle at unexpected moments.
I would change it for something a little more up market but the last time I looked at it I decided that removing the exhaust to get it out would cause irreparable damage as it's so goddam rusty under there so left well alone.
I know some of you are going to tell me I don't have to take the exhaust off to get the shock out but the linkages have probably never been off in 23 years so until I can do the whole job properly its staying put.
Damping- the jury's out. I can't tell if there's any difference between min or max. Probably a sign it's past its sell by date.
Basically, if you're comfortable and the bike corners well... you've probably got it about right.
Anyway, Ken's right. Sprock aint no fly weight.

Thanks for suggestions, it is much appreciated, I think I will set it at halfway and go from there. I would have gone for an aftermarket shock but tight budget meant I had to go with 2nd hand. Anything would be better than what I had.
