Noise from an '88
#11
How long can you expect to get out of the timing chain in one of these, and is there anyway to change it without spliting the case? The ol' girl has 47,000 kms. on her now, noise doesn't get louder with revs, and can't see any loss of performance from her.Oh yeah, one other thing. How do you guys ride one of these road rockets and keep a liscense?
I've had 3 chains in 48 000 miles, but you can change them without splitting the casings - you need to buy a chain with a masterlink, ie DID or Takasago.
Adjusting your carb heights until they are correctly synchronised , ie the vacuums, can improve the chain noise.
There are plenty of posts on this - check the history..................

Hmmmmm - check the road first and pick your time - Sunday morning isn't it !

Sprockaholic,
When I cut the chain, I neglected to look at the sprocket 1st. My fault ***-u-me that people would keep things stock so I ordered a 17/42. I cut the chain to the length of the one of the bike before pulling the front sprocket. Well low and behold there was a 15 in there and the chain was cut to the 15 and I bought a 17. Figured it would be easier (and much cheaper) to buy another 15. Next one I'm takin it back to factory though. My speedo is about 10-15mph off (too fast).

We do not have a tutorial on just the cam chain replacement as yet , but this thread dealing with the tensioner does go through most of the processes for getting at the chain and tensioner ...
Have a good old read mate ... you will need to read about the tensioner as well anyway...
https://cbrforum.com/forum/cbr-1000f-hurricane-38/cam-chain-tensioner-again-3995/
These 2 particular pages of that thread have some nice pics of the guts and glory inside them ...

My rear looked OK when I changed mine, but when I pulled the front off I was surprised it would even catch the chain! Take a looksie.... Like everyone else, I always change in sets. But like the guys are saying may be cam chain time.... I'm dreading this one comming soon... "sigh"
No doubt that , that is a grim looking sprocket and prolly would be causing a chit load of noise it self...
What ever or how ever you decide to sort your noise issue ....get rid of that thang !! first !! ......

There's plenty on camchain replacement in the past posts.
We'll help you through it.
With practice you can do it in about 4 hours but ONLY if you buy a camchain with a masterlink - if you try to do it with a Honda chain, be prepared to pull the motor, and replace all the gaskets, etc etc.

you could go down to a 39 on the rear which would put you near where
you need to be and the chain will fit.
The nice thing with messing with the sprockets is you can mix 'em up
pretty good for a single chain.
Standard link count for a 17/42 is 114. I'm at 116 with an 18/44 but
116 links also work down to 15/44 .........so you have leeway with this
stuff.........just disregard the chain wear sticky when moving sprockets
and chain lenghts around
