Default Neutral light coming on

Guys,
My mates 89 has developed an issue where the neutral light is coming on when he changes gear. So as soon as he grabs the next gear it comes on and the same for the next gear and so on. What would he be looking at there. I realise it some sort of electrical problem but I'm brain dead when it comes to the intricacies of bike electrics.....Cheers and thanks in advance.

My guess would be the neutral switch is grounding out.
How many shifts does a '89 have on it? Its probably tired.

I'd be careful, it may let the bike turn over in gear when the light is on.

Just brilliant Sprock.

It's that sort of knowledge (and forum longevity ) that makes this place so worthwhile.

It too is now tucked away in my "**** you never knew about the bike folder".

Cheers, SB

Also put in "**** that's impossible to find" because it is - wrapped into the harness

OK, so the situation is not what I was thinking. The N light actually comes on when the clutch lever is pulled to change gears and then goes out when the lever is released. That would drive me nuts.

I missed that thread but nice to know.

I had the neutral light on all the time. My problem was that I forgot to connect the neutral switch. This one is on the right side of the bike by the coolant overflow reservoir. Once I plugged it back on, neutral light would only turn on when in neutral. Don't know if that could be your issue but take a look.
