The situation would be different if the engine needs to be bored anyway, but in this case a used engine may be a cheaper option.I've read that big bore kits may make the engine prone to overheat; I've not tested a kit myself though.

I'm running 12 to1 on my Bird, and on top of that I also have a 3-degree ignition advancer that will make the bike even more prone to pre-ignition. The bike runs fine and never pings onnormal pump gas :-)

Why are you always coming on here and making so much sense, R1000?
I can't say I really understand the bigger bore kit with respect to this bike. I mean, I understand it, but...
It seems like ahell of a lot of work, money, and risk for the potential gain.
My buddyrides an '03ZX9R, he weighs 100lbs less than me, and so does his bike. He's also got more HP than me, and been riding abit longer than me. If I were to bore my bike, he'sstill gonna whip my ***.

I have the Wiseco 1049 cc kit in my '88. Compression is not a problem. I can only get 91 octane here and it never gave me a problem with detonation(until I turbo'd it LoL). Aluminum heads resist detonation, plus the fact that it is a bike and isn't as much load as you would see in a car. I didn't notice a huge gain with the kit, mostly torque. Quarter mile times stayed the same(but I was having traction problems with the stock 140 rear at the time). Doing some big changes this winter. Converting to Megasquirt EFI, 8" rear rim/240 tire single sided, single sided front, custom bodywork, rebuilt engine etc. Hoping to break 200 whp with redesign of my manifolds and EFI. Should be fun.
